Janis Wins Number 18 Keeps Pressure on Cannon

Budds Creek, MD – It's still a long shot but Lancaster, New York's Mike Janis kept his championship hopes alive with a win at this weekend's President's Cup Nationals in Budds Creek Maryland. Earning his second Iron Man in seven days, Janis is now able to keep the pressure on point's leader Scott Cannon junior.

"This was a great race for our team," said Janis. "We've been able to capitalize on other's mistakes and better our program in the process. These past few weeks we've learned so much. Being able to go rounds keeps our program progressing".

With the IHRA season winding down Janis and his crew knew they needed to go after every point available coming into the event. "Budds Creek is a great track. We've always run good here and we knew the weather would be good enough for a record run but, when Scott junior took those points during qualifying our hearts sank for a minute," said crew chief Mike Janis junior. "Then it was back to racing. We can't let what others do affect our program. So, we turned our focus to winning this race and that's just what we did."

After qualifying with Janis' Jan-Cen powered Cobalt in the fourth position Janis faced off with EFI wizard Harold Martin and his AC Delco Sponsored 07' Grand Am. As Janis staged the car he noticed he had no oil pressure. "I was ready to shut her down when I told Li'l Mike over the radio. He screamed at me to stage it. My plan was to leave the line and shut her down but when Harold went into shake I hit her and luckily she made it to the other end. Later we found a faulty panel causing a false gauge reading. That's why he's the crew chief," said Mike Janis.

In round two action Janis was paired with defending series Champ Quain Stott. Stott left first but it was Jan-Cen Horsepower from there as Janis took the win with a 6.037 at just under 240 miles per hour to Stott's 6.057 at just over 239 miles per hour. The win over Stott Gave Janis lane choice in the semi's over Nitrous standout Pat Stoken.

Stoken who wheeled his beautiful 68 Camaro into the semis with wins over Kenny Lang and Ed Hoover took the slightest of reaction time advantages over Janis but, was unable to hold off the Torco race fueled equipped car of Janis. Janis took the victory with an impressive 6.026 pass at just over 240mph to Stoken's 6.195 at 226.

The win over Stoken put Janis in his fourth final of the season and second in seven days. Janis' opponent this week would be Middletown, Massachusetts' John Russo. Russo at the wheel of his new Vanishing point Camaro with Al Billes power made it to the finals by defeating Kenny Lang, Scott Cannon, and Jason Hamstra.

When the tree went green it was Russo away first but he could not hold off Janis' Jan-Cen powered entry. Janis cruised by Russo with a 6.025 at 241.63 to Russo's losing 6.127 at 241.24. The win over Russo gave Janis his 18th Career Iron Man.

"I know I've said this before but I can't thank my son (Crew Chief Mike Janis junior) enough. He's the fuel behind this team. He keeps me going and makes this fun. Without him and the help we get from our sponsors none of this would be possible," said Janis.

Crew Chief Mike junior also had some people to thank. "Pat (Norcia) from Ram (Ram Clutches) really helped us out this race. It's great to have the support of a company like Ram and to be able to get the assistance you need at the rack from a guy like Pat," said Mike junior.

With only one event remaining on the IHRA calendar Mike Janis and his team still have a slim shot at their third Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series IHRA Pro Mod crown. The next event on the $19.5 million Knoll Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series is the IHRA World Finals presented by the United States Air Force, Oct. 19-21, at historic Rockingham Dragway.
