Sounds like they leave the line around 8000 and go through the traps at 11000 or so. I haven't watched a ton of rounds this year, but a few sound like they are really singing at the traps.

Re: How high are PS engines winging now?

I don't know for sure but 10 yrs ago our D/A (290 ci) small block was going through the traps around 9500.... your 11000 sounds a little high.. although I have not been around those engines for a few years... but if I were to guess I'd guess 9000 - 9500 at the finishline...

I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will pipe up...

John;

A lot of the engines that I have worked with, like to be shifted around 10300 and go thru the traps at about 10400. I would speculate that the fast cars are about 10500 on the shifts and 10550 at the stripe.

I would have to say based of what I hear around the pits you are pretty close... JMO

It blows my mind that a 500 ci engine can spin that quick and not toss it's cookies on the track.

Re: How high are PS engines winging now?

I swear I can hear the valves floating when they cross the finish line.

Now that you mention it, it is pretty amazing that "ka-boom" type engine failures are pretty rare with these 10,000 rpm push rod engines.

Thanks guys. Mike's car was one that really stuck out to me by sound. Sounds wicked.

What type of launch rpm are they at? Some sound "normal" and others sound like they are way up there at the clutch drop.

Re: How high are PS engines winging now?

I remember an article a few yrs back where PS engine builders were looking at how F1 engines were turning 19000 RPM for long periods of time...

And this Builder (WJ) comes to mind (not sure) but they tried using better valve springs to prevent float, and believe it or not the 500 ci motors ran better with the current Valve Springs...and the valves floting just a little...

(I think)

I'm sure Jim Yates, or Nick Ferri would know if this is true or not... I'd be interested to know... if F1 cars are turning 19000 and I think there is a RPM rule in that series now limiting RPM... but if they can turn those rpm's I don't see why PS cant go higher than 11000 .. However there IS a big difference in the TYPE of engine and the stroke etc...

The rotating assemblies can take a lot of RPM, it's the valvetrain that's the weak spot. That's why F1 went to pneumatic valves. Pneumatic valve springs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And the story you're thinking of was posted right here on Nitromater by none other than Alan Reinhart. I believe he was working with Nickens at the time.

Re: How high are PS engines winging now?

How much do they RPM in the stage beam right before launch?
...and during the burnout?

Re: How high are PS engines winging now?

Jim, Nick

how much does a PS engine have for piston to wall and then piston to head clearance?

I know the Nitro engines are real real loose ;)

Would either of you care to share pistion wieght? I guessing 400 grams.
with out pin

I believe it was Reinhart that told us the story. If I remember correctly, it was something to do with a Spinatron (sp?) and they were testing it at Nickens shop. Had something to do with somebody that could build a better valve spring. Alan refresh my memory here.

Re: How high are PS engines winging now?

Wow! Pneumatic valves "springs" (or , even, electronically controlled).

I'm guessing either would be illegal (or immediately ruled so), no?
-----------------

Don't really want to open that can o' worms (again) but, it would be neat to see state-of-the-art technology applied to Pro-Stock - I mean, do-able, practical stuff - like 4 valve per cylinder - overhead cams - EFI (of course) - variable valve timing and other electronicic or mechanical stuff - six speed automatic transmissions (without resorting to power adders).
