we all have a car that got away. back in the late 70's you could buy a used muscle car for a song. too bad I couldn't afford more than a couple on notes back then.
I too gave up a my prized possession, a 1966 Ford Fairlane GT 500, for a Pinto thinking it was the right thing to do.
I drove that Pinto into the ground. How many Tesla's has caught fire?
Had a Ford Explorer that had over 250,000 miles on it when I got rid of it and it never rolled over. Could it be because I wasn't driving like Mario Andretti?
Always had Firestone tires, never had a blow out. Could it be because I checked the tire pressure and gave a good visual inspection on them at least once a month?
I'm not saying any of the above products didn't have some flaws, I'm saying maybe it was the way people were using them.

Wasn't the Pinto fires due to a design defect that Ford decided was cheaper to pay out settlements to injured parties than apply the fix to prevent it? Tesla's issues (including fires you read about) is due to the abysmal build quality. It's funny how Elon Musk has the money to send people to space, build tunnels etc but cannot seem to want to spend money on quality control for his bread and butter product.
Nah, the Pinto fix was a little piece of bent sheet metal with a hole in it. When people actually took their Pinto in for the recall, the mechanic didn't even need to pull the car into a bay. A mechanic with a 3/8" ratchet and 9/16" socket would lay down by the right rear wheel, reach under and take off the bottom shock nut and pull the shock off an inch or two. Then he would put the piece of sheet metal on, reinstall the shock and tighten the nut back up. After the install if the car was rear ended, the broken shock wouldn't stab the 3/4 empty gas tank and ignite the vapors. Simple and easy fix but that wouldn't sell magazines or newspapers so all everyone heard about was the 11 that burned. (I apologize for leading the Houston Raceway thread so very, very far astray!)

Some tire failures were due to some tires not being rotated right, had bridgstones on my explorer that were not rotated right, had one explode on freeway, didn’t have problem with handling, GM had a bad ignition switch for over thirty years that caused fatal accidents, one of there fixes was to change part number and call it fixed, the big 3 all have been guilty of putting money before human life for the sake lowest cost fix or overall profit
