BROKEN ARROW, OKLA – March 31, 2007 - This weekend’s NHRA O’Reilly Spring Nationals will feature a bundle a firsts for third-year top alcohol funny car driver Brandon “The Kid” Lewis – some exciting, some disappointing.
The 21-year-old driver will compete in his first national event of the 2007 season and his first national at Houston Raceway Park. However, it will also mark the first time the drag racing up-and-comer will take to the strip without a major sponsor.
Aluminum Tank and Truck Accessories, which had resided on the side of Lewis’s Monte Carlo since 2005, informed the team on Tuesday it would not be able to continue supporting the racing effort despite the team’s continued rise to prominence.
“Losing ATTA is unfortunate from the financial aspect and it’s a disappointing development in a business relationship that became a close friendship,” Lewis said. “We wish Gene Hackett the best of luck and hope to see ATTA back in drag racing in the future.”
Discouraging as the loss of a sponsor can be, Lewis said the team is looking at it as an opportunity to create a new partnership and they won’t let it rob the momentum that was built with a semifinal appearance at the South Central Division points race in Memphis.
“The logo on the side of a car doesn’t make it go any faster,” Lewis said. “We have high expectations for our performance in Houston, and when everyone sees what we’re going to do this year we’ll find another sponsor to help out.”
Until ATTA is replaced, Lewis Racing Team will run “Your Logo Here” decals on the car to promote the existing opportunity. Potential sponsors wishing to find out more about joining Lewis Racing team should contact Jimmy Hart at (918) 261-7887.
Top alcohol qualifying is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Houston Raceway Park.
