Brandon “The Kid” Lewis happy with strong numbers in a-fuel dragster debut

BROKEN ARROW, OKLA – April 17, 2007 - The best thing about your first race in a new class is that it’s pretty much guaranteed you’re going to set some career bests.

Brandon “The Kid” Lewis debuted his a-fuel dragster this weekend at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series South Central Division points race at Texas Motorplex and said he was happy with the results.

The third-year driver, who made the switch to a-fuel dragster from top alcohol funny car, qualified in the No. 5 spot and drew fellow Oklahoman Brandon Pierce in the first round. Pierce got the best of Lewis before going on to the finals, but Lewis was happy with the 5.406 elapsed time and 265.06 mph top speed he put up at his first event.

“Pierce made a solid pass but we made it a good drag race all the way to the end,” Lewis said. “We‘re really happy we posted good numbers and I felt really strong about the car.”

With veteran tuner Tom Conway contributing to the Lewis Racing Team effort, the 21-year-old driver said he’s excited to see what kind of progress he can make as the season continues.

“Tom knows the car and obviously knows how to win a drag race. Once he adjusts to having me in the driver’s seat and I get better at piloting this dragster, we’re going to be in some fun races,” Lewis said.

“I just have to learn the driving style. If I felt the front tires of the funny car moving, I knew where it was taking me. This car is different and it’s my job to get used to that.”
