I have spent about 2 1/2 years in Las Vegas...I can give you some pointers on cheap, but decent rooms...

1.) Anything in the Freemont Street Experience...Other than the Golden Nugget, it is pretty inexpensive to stay there ($60-$80 I am guessing)....Las Vegas Club, The Plaza, Fitzgeralds, etc...STAY AWAY FROM THE EL CORTEZ..! This is also a straight shot to the track..In fact, there is bus service that runs pretty often as a shuttle specifically for the race track on race weekends...It leaves from Freemont Street, in fact....

2.) Another good one is Arizona Charlies EAST on Boulder Highway, as well as Sam's Town. There are quite a few on Boulder Highway, in fact, including a Super 8, the Joker's Wild, and Nevada Palace (whick is borderline acceptable, but a good last choice). These will be in the $30-$50 range...

The advantage of staying on Boulder Highway, is that you can take 1 bus, going Northbound, to get downtown to meet the shuttle busses...

These are the best options for accomodations IF in fact, you are on a budget...

Oh, also...If you are looking for some real fun, my best friend rents scooters on the strip really cheap....All you need is a drivers license and off you go...Optional helmets on scooters, too....Its a REALLY fun way to see the strip at night...His name is Mike Pira...Par-A-Dice Scooters...702.341.7368...

Tell him I told you to call him..He will be VERY good to you..

Feel free to ask anything that you need about getting around in Las Vegas....I wil help as much as I can...

Good suggestions Jay, there is a big convention (NAB)in town that weekend so I would book as soon as possible. Also if you are staying on the boulder strip try to avoid Nellis blvd on the way to the race. It is down to two lanes off and on between Vegas Valley and Lake Mead on the way out and down to one lane in a couple of spots on the way back. A good way around it is Lamb blvd. just a block or two to the West of Nellis. If you are looking for more racing on Satruday night go to the Bullring at LVMS for local short track Racing (show starts at 7 gates at 5) $1 beer and $1 hot dogs!

Thought that I heard that there was a Las vegas Grand Prix in downtown this weekend or next?

Downtown Las Vegas has pretty reasonable rates and since the Fremont Street deal opened up, it has really changed. It's not as "seedy" as before....

I forgot the name of the casino/hotel off of Craig road. I think it was the Fiesta or something. It wasn't bad. About 10 minutes to the track too...

Is Interstate 15 still jacked? Seems every year they have some construction that puts it down to one lane and it's 10 MPH!

The El Cortez has been cleaning up their act over the last year or so. The Vegas Club has surprisingly large rooms, but if you like using bar soap in the shower, bring your own as all they have is liquid dispensers.

The Cannery is at I-15 and Craig Road, always sold out during race weekend. The Barcelona is on Craig Road, small and cheap, weekly rates with kitchenettes, looks a little seedy for my tastes. The Boulder Station is a good place to stay, not too far from the LVMS and you don't have to fight the traffic on the strip or the interstate.

I just spent a couple nights in the new Fantasy Tower at the Palms. It was a VERY nice jacuzzi suite, three flat panel TV's, got it on Expedia for $53/night! And, I brought home some of the casino's money -- a free vacation plus some cash!

Helluva deal...what was that, like a Tuesday or Wednesday? Expedia looks like they`re all sold out next weekend, but you can stay in a standard room there next Sunday night for just $276! Next weekend is going to be EXPENSIVE in Vegas!!! The Hiltons avg. night stay is about $270 per night, or about what we`re paying for four nights there with Players Club rates.

Checked in Sunday, checked out yesterday, and you're right, it was a killer deal. I stayed there one other time, Saturday check in, Monday check out for $85/night, again through Expedia.

Texas Station and Fiesta Rancho aren't bad choices for race weekend either. North Las Vegas, not too far off the interstate from the Lake Mead Blvd exit.

Sundays thru Wednesdays you can get some awesome deals at most of those 4-5 star places. But Fri-Sat better take out a loan!

Wow, $53 bucks!!! Did you luck up on that one or did you scope out Expedia for awhile?

I got an excellent offer from United for the plane ticket, so I went to Expedia to see what they had for Vegas hotel rooms. They have some of the best rates for Vegas rooms, and you know where you are staying before you pay for the reservation, unlike some of the other discount room brokers like Priceline. I thought I was going to be in a standard room (those are nice too) and was very surprised when they gave me the suite. The only drawback to using the discount brokers for Vegas hotels is, if you are a gambler, you can't have your room comped or discounted due to your action on the tables or slots at checkout -- the travel agent prepaid for the reservation and received a booking discount (same deal with vacation packages that include airfare and/or rental cars).

I had a blast and got pretty lucky! :)

The Grand prix is this weekend.

Gentlemen, the cheapest way to get a hotel in Vegas is to find a wife who is extraordinarily lucky in the casino while you go out to the track, and have the casino comp you a room on your next visit.:D This will be my third consecutive trip to Vegas getting a room comped at the Venetian (we're getting three nights there) and the wife has come home with their money the last two times. Hopefully, this trip will be as fruitful as the past two. I could never afford to pay to stay there but if I had to pay for a room, Main Street Station downtown is ranked pretty high on TripAdvisor.com and you can usually score a room there for $60/night. Plus, if you're going to play at all in any casino, ALWAYS get a player's card. Main St. Station offered us two free nights in April (we're moving there after we stay at the Venetian) after we spent about 30 minutes in there last October and spent a mere $20.

Hey I made a mistake in my first post. lamb blvd is to the west of nellis not to the East. Sorry I've lived here 20 years and still get that wrong every once and a while. I grew up in Ca. so everything seems like it's east to me.
