The Houston event is over - according to NHRA.com. The little current events box on the right hand side says "Houston, Texas - Oriley Spring Nationals - COMPLETED in big yellow letters!!

Way to go NHRA!

Us hardcores here might interepret that as the countdown to launch is completed..... but for the sprouting fan, to log on and see that...... BAD

hi jesse!

Well i did not get to see the play you are speaking about, but if it was near the end of the game, and one team was behind...the trailing team will sometimes 'pull the goalie'. This leaves their net unprotected, but provides them with an extra 'attacker' to attempt to score.
I guess in drag racing terms, its like deep staging. Sure it might give you a bit of advantage but you risk red lighting.

Todays hockey tip has been brought to you by, the NHL...another organization that gets no love from the mainstream.

But our sport will preempt cheerleading today:) i wonder if the cheerleading message boards are going nuts today about their sport being preempted by drag racing today?

Tim, great analogy!
Whereas my less than stellar PC Friars will not be heading to DC this year (ok, they didn't even make the playoffs) I will be heading to DC to cheer for 2 Hockey East Teams this year. UVM is in, and today's Northeast Regional Final will decide if the other will be BU or UNH. I'm rooting for UNH in that game myself. It's time that we see someone other than BC or BU with the title (assuming they get to the final and win).

I will give a warm welcome to Bedmiji (Whaaaat?) State in the finals. Nice to see the underdogs go "rounds".

No WCHA teams made it! I am stunnedabout the whole NCAA hockey tournament so far. I don't like the one-and-done format. The best teams in the country are not going to be in the Frozen Four. Great stuff though; these kids deserve it. Arguably, all "underdogs" are going to the big show. That's like Arley Langlo going to Indy and on Sunday beating Antron Brown, Tony Shoemacher, Cory Mac, and then beating Larry Dixon in the final - on a holeshot, with low ET of the meet!

They pulled the goalie waaaay early, a gutsy but good call. They were down 6-3 with 6 minutes left. The announcers mentioned that they did something similar earlier in the season and scored 3 goals. The did get burned on it but the Defense players erred, they both jumped the puck and let the off man go through all alone. An easy pass over to him and he had a shot that even I couldn't miss.

PJ, my friend, I love ya but have no idea whatsoever what you are talking about!:p We have the Tri City Storm Junior hockey team that plays in Kearney, NE, but since the games are all attended by cornfield dwellers like me that have no idea what is going on, we watch, yell at apparently appropriate times, wait for fights, and most importantly, drink beer. We here in Nebraska believe THAT is the true essence of Hockey, and further understanding of the game (that apparently has two half-times, but one of the half-times involves a Zamboni shooting hot dogs into the stands, so don't be caught going to the bathroom or buying beer at that time) could only serve to diminish our enjoyment of the contest.....or something like that.

Check the address, I'm from Hockeytown..actually I'll be heading to a wings game later this week

can someone please fill me in on what happened; was busy all weekend
with very little TV, including yesterday.......did get to watch our UMD Bulldogs
pull of an amazing victory over Princeton friday nite!......only to
hear of disappointing loss sat. nite to miami of ohio.

but then last nite did get to watch Bemidji State score an amazing victory
over Cornell to move into the frozen four!!!!!

I must admit, I'm pleasantly surprised to see such interest in college hockey here! If any of you guys are ever in Denver next season - let me know.

Mike, a Bemidji State fan had a sign in the crowd last night that pretty much sums up this years playoffs...

Players Believed
Fans Believed
College Hockey Didn't!

It's been a season of upsets with the exception of BU. I'll be rooting for a Vermont/Bemidji Final being happy with either as the winner.

Last night was the first time I watched Bemidji play, and after the first minute or two I was amazed at how fast they were. Then the announcer says that they seem OFF from the previous nights speed. WOW!

The only complaint I had is how many times the camera crew kept losing the puck... Can you image Force racing Capps and the Camera Guy/Gal staying focused on the Starting Line.. Sheesh!

Chris, honestly if I had a choice between free NHL tickets or College Hockey, I'd take the College Tickets. It's great watching the kids play.

Only travel plans for next year is the Frozen Four in Detroit. I can't wait to experience 80,000 screaming hockey fans at Ford Field..

Ford Field -

i thought the same thing - i'm thinkin' that was someone's first or second
time behind a camera (being a sunday nite game on espnu)

correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe bemidji state has only been a div. 1
team for a few years and they play in the CHA? which they won and
by doing so became one of sixteen to seed in the tourny; in fact they
were the 16 seed and i think the only 16 seed in ncaa div.1 hockey history
to make the frozen four.......this is truly a cinderella story.

i think they want into the wcha but currently are being blocked.
they play wcha teams and i think lost every one they played this year.
something like that.......not an expert on this stuff by any means.

They have been in Div1 since 1999, so while not yesterday, still a VERY new team to the Division. They apparently dominated the other divisions.

Last night they compared their championship berth to the 64 seed in NCAA Basketball making it to the Final Four, and they are the first team in NCAA history to get in from the 16th spot.

UPDATE: Details on their bid to get into WCHA.

Speaking of First times....

This HAS to be the first time a thread was started to discuss yet another sport bumping NHRA from TV and fans of that sport have taken over the thread..

Terry, my apologies...
College Hockey is one of my other true passions...

Yeah, this is Cool. I'm actually an Off-Ice Official at DU. I'm pulling for Rico & the 'Hawks, now! I do think this wacky post-season is great for the sport; I've said for years how my hockey & NHRA schedules compliment each other very nicely; As the countdown is winding down in the fall - hockey is just starting, and then vice-versa in the spring.

Rico rocks. He had a great teacher! Oh and this is a thread hi-jack that nebraski would be proud of! Hockey and drag racing have many comparisons. I am actually writing about that now:)

As much as I love Drag Racing, I could accept it being bumped by Gopher hockey anytime. maybe next year...

I believe the play that was being asked about was when there was a penalty called, and pulling the goalie created a 4 on 6 (i think) it didnt work out but a bold play anyway.

Congrats to independant Craig Treble on his strong performance and win on Sunday. Hope you get some major money soon!

Awesome post donnie! Two reasons. One the gopher reference. My avalanche just signed your capt. Second, the Treble reference. Talking with my friend mollie from denver, we agree that craig is one of the BEST pro bike racers out there! Last week he was in LA racing in the (sorry mollie) Jegs sports nationals and he was the number one qualifier based on rt. And he did it on used parts. Great post donnie!
