Hernandez brings perfect record to IHRA World Finals

ROCKINGHAM, NC - Josh Hernandez has raced in only two IHRA Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com Pro Modified events in his career and in those outings he has amassed two national event victories, eight consecutive round victories and a speed record. What does that mean in the grand scheme of things headed into this weekend’s IHRA Universal Technical Institute World Finals?

“Absolutely nothing,” Hernandez said. “When you come into this arena what you did the previous race is a memory. It’s history. Each race demands that you start anew. We are looking forward to this challenge and we certainly have all the weapons that it takes to win. Those weapons only work if you move forward and use them instead of sitting back and resting on your laurels.”

If recent performances serve as a harbinger of things to come it could be a long weekend for the competition. Hernandez, driver of the AMS Rage Camaro, recently concluded his 2006 American Drag Racing League campaign as the runner-up for the championship in the Pro Extreme division. He entered the final “Battle for the Belt” competition at Kennedale Dragway as the sixth ranked driver and battled his way past such hitters as Joey Martin and Mike Neal before dropping a close match opposite of Bubba Stanton.

Hernandez is also ranked fourth in the NHRA AMS Pro Modified Championship chase and with one race left has a mathematical chance to emerge as champion.

Hernandez employs a wealth of enthusiasm and that could be one of many positive attributes headed into the final stop on the 2006 IHRA tour. His last IHRA stop in Rockingham didn’t establish any top performances in the elapsed time department but his starting line prowess was better suited for a driving clinic. Hernandez outran two opponents on power and snagged two holeshot victories to take home the trophy.

Hernandez pulled off a similar feat four months later in Martin, Michigan during the IHRA Torco Northern Nationals. That weekend he was the man to beat on race day with four consecutive raceday low elapsed times and a final round defeat of the defending world champion.
