George Blanda was 48 years old when he played in his last NFL game. Baseball legend Satchel Paige was just shy of 60 when he threw his final pitch. Gary Player was 73 in his farewell pro golf tournament. Stock car racer Hershel McGriff was 90 when he competed on a 3/8ths-mile Tucson Speedway in...
As the Greek himself said - Ask Garlits, he knows!
I've always gotten a kick out the coyness with which he's handled the question over the years. Makes me wonder if Garlits' claim to know it really is the wrong date the Greek is having more fun with us.

I think he said in an interview that he had some "trouble" and joining up in the Army in 1945 - probably not long before Germany surrendered - was the better option (I assume jail/prison was the other choice). He was pretty crafty in the explanation, just like he is when asked his age, and it cracks me up when he does that.
