Another problem nobody has mentioned is four races back to back. That is tough on everyone...........

Actually for him it was 6 races. He ran Indy, a match race in Michigan I believe (where the newly repaired wing failed and the car went into the sand), Charlotte, Dallas, Memphis and Richmond.

From what I know, Terry had no intention of running Richmond. They had always planned to come back to Texas after Memphis and spend the extra time to get prepared for Vegas and Pomona. However, NHRA knew they were only going to have 12 cars at Richmond, so they basically begged Terry and a couple of others to show up. They needed the car count. They guaranteed qualifying money, and basically said since they weren't going to have to pay 17th and 18th qualifiers, that they were going to boost the pay for qualifying. That is the only reason Terry even went to Richmond to begin with. So yeah, 6 weekends of racing is a definitely a strain.

Also, in regards to what people are saying about him breaking and oiling the track, and giving the Safety Safari a break, etc. etc. You have to take into consideration that out of 66 runs this year, there were only 6 runs where they had some sort of serious problem. There were only 3 runs that actually put oil on the track. Compare that to some other teams that are out there. Also keep in mind they made 13 runs on the funny car without any breakage or oil as well.

Ok so we see Doc is still running the same pistons from 1985. LOL. I bet he still has parts under the couch at the house from the 70's.

And nobody knows about no house or front porch. LOL.

This thread seems to want to not die...

All the trouble was with the long car right?

So could Terry just drag out the F/C and show up to run in Vegas and Pomona?

Can almost see Graham Lights face now.

Not quite true Nitro breath, Doc sold those pistons (4.250) to Danny Miller ,
we use 4.187 now , he got those at a big show clearance sale.
Not under the couch , but on the shelf in the shop.
Gaynor bought a lot of Doc's stuff from the '80s.

PS, the F/C was a blowed-up several months ago, needed body repairs and a motor.

He blew up the funny car at Martin, MI. and brought out the dragster to make the second round of the match race and put it in the sand.
September 12 was not a good day for Terry.

I didn't want to embarrass the Nitro children too much this past year.
Also Doc likes the fact that we ran the same eight pistons at six events, more money for bus payments.
Stay tuned in 2010, we took the block of wood out from under the pedal last week.
The "bus driver" is now ready to go faster.
Man, I can't wait to see what that thing will run after reading this. :D

I've read the entire thread. I appreciate the comments made. As my signature would indicate, I'm a big fan of Terry both personally and professionally. Setting that fact aside, it would be easier for me to accept the NHRA's deep-seated concern for safety if:
- They had listened to Whit Bazemore railing against fixed objections around racetracks before we lost Scott.
- They listened to many racers about tire safety/performance before we lost Darrell (see post #18 in this thread).
- They didn't "try" to shut off a leaking Tony Schumacher before sending him anyway.

It would be easier for me to accept the fans commentary if these weren't some of the same fans who cheered when ESPN2 caught a leak on the Brut Funny Car's motor. Ace wrapped a glove around the leak and sent Ron on his way. Some of the same fans in this very thread criticizing Terry's perceived lack of concern for safety were the same fans thumping their chests yelling "That's old time racing! Wrap a glove around it and send 'em! Yeah!" Guess safety wasn't as important for them then as it is now?

It would be easier to accept the two race suspension if I honestly believed that the same penalty would be applied to a fully funded NHRA team. I mean, the testing rules were applied to Terry and John Force the same way, right? That was just a "clarification" not bending the rules, right?

As for the repeated "taking the car keys away from a drunk" comments, I guess nobody values that same "drunk" won the '08 IHRA Funny Car championship. No, it's not the NHRA but, no, there were other teams trying to win the same championship that Terry won. I guess it would be easier for me to accept any/all of these comments if I honestly believed they would be applied to all the teams who made a similar error.

In the profound words of the Caveman from the Geico commercial. "What?"

Charles, I think you need to go back and RE-READ the entire thread. And then come back and explain say just one of your many points like the drunk thing. Where specifically did anyone call the 2008 IHRA F/C champion a drunk?

(shakes head while walking away from desk to get a drink)

... bothers me is the way it was handled. Obviously, I was not there and not privy to conversations.......
This was not the only time Terry was found to not have properly prepared the cars this season .
I know that he was told as early as Gainesville to fix something, and he didn't do it.
Supposedly there were other times during this season ?
I hear that this time the tech guys & Graham had enough of his actions.

Ummm, right here

Thank you Bob for the big damn word. Nice way to raise the bar. (oops). LOL... and spelt right I might add at least as far as I can tell...

And if the thread was read completely it also said about the line that has been many times over the years in the fuel pits. "For NHRA it was the same thing as taking the keys away from a drunk." (read, it says, "the same thing as") NOT THAT HE IS/WAS.

Then there is this:
"Actually it came from Steve Evans when we were at dinner one night. That was at the time when NHRA went from the fuel guys sitting in line all day to make several runs, to allowing them only two sessions per day."

And then to further explain the euphemistic (sp)/ double entendre' (sp) there was reference to the 'someone' driving while over indulged and running into a house while back.

Sometimes on a message board people have unitentional side conversations or jabs that get caught up in the posting like Mr. Newman and myself were bantering back and forth.

And I still stand by my addiction comment about the drug some refer to as Nitro. So paste me on that one too while you're at it. (Must be something to that as even old people who drive buses 500 plus miles with grey hair named Doc do it.)

Unwad the damn panties and pull em out of the crack they must really hurt and chaff being stuck up that damn far.

Back to your regular programming and the thread that obviously has gone past 8 short or 2 long pages.

And RIP Mr. Steve Evans. God Bless the Man.

you girls all have your panties in a bunch again. I read it as a metaphorical (sp?) remark.

For what its worth, I also took it as a non-literal comment. Hence the "quotes" in my post.

And there's the thing. The point of addiction is that the addict spends their money, damages themselves and achieves nothing. I understood your comment and felt that it was entirely misplaced as it pertains to Terry. He's a race winner and a champion. My opinion versus yours.

If you need a clearer statement from me:
- I think the NHRA's 'dedication to safety' is capricious.
- I think some of the NHRA's fans are hypocritical.
Your mileage may vary.

Unwad the damn panties and pull em out of the crack they must really hurt and chaff being stuck up that damn far.

Wouldn't be the first time... for any of us.
