What does NHRA have to do with fuel Altereds?

I believe they are classified as Exhibition Cars. And those who still run their cars would like to keep it that way for obvious reasons.

I used to go to Palmdale as often as I could. It was my go-to track when Bakersfield and Pomona were silent. That's when I was a bad employee and would always talk someone into calling in sick when they had a weekend shift so I could bring them to their first drag race. They always seemed to get a good group of alky funnies, some licensing runs, and almost always had a fuel altered or four, along with a sprinkling of fuel bikes. Was always a good show.

When I was in the Air Force, stationed at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, early 70's. I used to go to the old Tucson Dragway to watch the Fuel Altered Nationals. Damn, they put on a great show.

They do have a WFAN World Fuel Altered Nationals in Eddyville Iowa 1/8th mile track each year in August. I think now 7-8 th year for it?
Some killer car's there. I know a lot of the OFAA group run it and independents .Not limited to Nitro Only some 100% Alky burners that make some good passes.

Though I can enjoy the transformer altered, hey, it's still NITRO. But I agree. I still love the original versions. A whole lotta WOMP stuffed in a sawed-off chassis. I love the rash of rebuilds that occurred, my most favorite being Mike Sullivan's blue and white Fiat. My most favorite of all altered of all time. I think it's because it was my favorite back in the day, but it still looks GOOD. I know most people's favorite version was the red white and blue version, but for me, it was this blue and white machine. I wish he and his son had more play money to drag it out more often.

My other favorite of the latter day altered was the late 80's version of the Mob Fiat. BAD ASS.

It's tough to tell. It's sort of like a black ops deal. No one seems to speak much about wheelbase numbers, or size of tire, or what the actual rules are unless you go find each racing association and ferret it out. I'm sure they're out there somewhere.

Mike Sullivan says his remake Altered is 115" Car Build

High Heaven is 116" Car Build

Bradford, Pure Hell, Pure Heaven, Rat Trap, Winged Express, Nanook etc. it's hard to tell, but I would assume all the remake Altereds are around the same as Sullivan's, and any of the transformer types are nearer to late 80's to current funny car specs like Chris Cook says.

The last 2 Fourth of July's we have been entertained with a Fuel Altered's [ Buggy's ] Vs Pro Mods [ Taxis ] race . What a fun race with the advantage going to the lighter Buggy's of course but the Taxi's put all their heart and skills in chasing them .
Mitch Kings Bone Bucket usually put's on a good fiery burnout and Pro Mods come from far away for a chance to tear up a Buggy's Azz .
They also have other big tire cars there and S W Superchargers .
If the Texas Nostalgia Gasser thing ever takes off I have a Gasser straight axle frame sitting ready for my 55 . Heck it's all fun .

Yes they did! They held the Fuel Altered Nationals all thru the 70's and 80's as I recall. I was living in Tucson in the early 80's and attended a few then. They might not have ever stopped hosting them. Several of the current Fuel Altereds running the IHRA NitroJams are based out of Phoenix/Tucson. My good friend from that era, Mike Hilsabeck, in the Arizona Thunder AA/FA is based out of Phoenix. He's been "on tour" all over the country for the past 3 years now, thanks to IHRA.

As a kid, going to LACR and watching those Fuel Altered shows is what set the hook in me. Those die hard Fuel Altered guys kept the torch lit.
