Ellis and G2 Put Out the Red Carpet

With the Chicago area's Route 66 Raceway in Joliet so centrally located, this weekend's Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals will also be the closest race to many of Chip Ellis and G2 Motorsports' corporate sponsors. Ellis and the team will be rolling out the red pit mat for DRAG Specialties, S&S Cycle, SAP/itelligence, and Andrews Products. "We're entertaining tons of sponsors this weekend, so it should be exciting around our pits," noted team co-owner George Bryce.

"This will be the first drag racing experience for a lot of these corporate people and their clients," said Jackie Bryce, G2's vice president of operations. "I always enjoy introducing new people to the sport of motorcycle drag racing. It will be a lot of fun for everybody."

"We'll have a full compliment of DRAG Specialties dealers and reps there for their rig and display," said George Smith, G2 Motorsports president and crew chief for the DRAG Specialties Buell. "We'll also have up to 25 SAP and itelligence folks and some of their customers enjoying one of the suites for the weekend. John Andrews of Andrews Products—manufacturers of cams, gears and other products—will be there, and it's the home track for S&S Cycle, so there will be a lot of those guys there too.

"In the midst of all that, we are ready to renew our quest to move up further in the points," continued Smith. "We tested an improved piston on Monday. We've designed it to do an even better job controlling the rings, hold more vacuum, reduce blow-by, and make even more top end horsepower. It pulled as good of a vacuum reading as we've ever seen and the performance is real promising. We expect to have this piston ready to race sometime soon."

Before Monday's test, Ellis traveled to England and famed Santa Pod Raceway to aid G2 customer Tom Tinndahn. Denmark native Tinndahn qualified second for the event there with a 7.269 on his Buell, but the race itself was rained out. "It rained pretty much the entire time we were there," said Ellis. "We made two runs in five days. But Tom's bike is nice. He's kept it immaculate and made some new pieces for it."

"The weather looks like it's gonna be favorable this weekend in Joliet," said George Bryce. "And we do well there." True enough. Ellis and the G2 team have a good record at Route 66, taking a Wally home with them in 2005.

"We did pretty good there last year, too," said Ellis. "We didn't win, but I think we made it to the semis. I'm looking forward to it. If feels like it's been a long time since we raced. I feel good and I'm looking forward to getting out there and riding around a little bit."

"We're all positive and upbeat and ready to rock and roll," agreed Smith. "We're very intent on our three-prong attack for the DRAG Specialties bike. We need to make sure that Chip can leave hard and cut good lights, that we have consistency in the performance of our tune-up, and we're always looking for more power. We've got one of our stronger motors in the bike and we expect to do very well. Of course, we've gotta deal with ten more pounds."

Apparently due to the record breaking performance of Matt Smith's S&S powered Buell, the NHRA added ten pounds to all of the Buells. So while other bike/rider combinations in the Chicago field will weigh 615 pounds, the Buells will have a minimum weight of 625. "We put our ten pound heavier oil pan on," grinned George Bryce.

"That puts the weight as low and far forward as possible," said George Smith. "Ten pounds is not a lot, but that's ten more than all the other makes have to deal with. But we'll be OK. We're running good. We'll have a full plate, racing the bike and taking care of all the sponsors and making sure they get the full benefit of our partnership for their business."
