Ellis and G2 Take Performance Edge into Countdown to One

For the fourth time in the last five races, Chip Ellis qualified his DRAG Specialties/S&S powered Buell number one for his eleventh career NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle pole position. "We have a very fast motorcycle and Chip rode well," said George Smith, G2 co-owner and crew chief.

"The bike was flying," echoed Ellis. This time, the DRAG Specialties/S&S Cycle Buell wasn't the fastest bike right off the trailer at the O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals in Dallas. The team had to work for it.

"The Team was consistent enough during qualifying that we took over the leadership in the season Full Throttle Pit Crew competition," said Smith. The Full Throttle award is coveted by all teams, as it focuses more on the performance of the crew than driver. The G2 team, anchored by the steady hand of veteran chief mechanic Ken "Big" Johnson, won the award last year and is in a strong position to do the same in 2007.

On raceday, Ellis started off by knocking young Michael Ray out of his first ever NHRA national event in round 1.

Chip's 6 second lap earned him lane choice over Eddie Krawiec in round 2.

Ellis again had lane choice over Peggy Llewellyn in the semi, but his .001 light in the second round may have caused him to back off a touch at the tree. Chip was out of the race, but locked into the final four of the NHRA's Countdown to the Championship playoff series in third place.

Chip Ellis .105 7.109 at 186.82 mph

"If I had to lose to anybody, I'm glad it was Peggy," said Ellis. Llewellyn, whose trailer is always parked next to the G2 trailer, rides a Buell for G2 customer Karl Klement. After beating Chip, Peggy went on to win her first race and grab the last spot in the Countdown's final four. "We had a mechanical problem and a bad light. My bike was still faster than hers, but when I slack off at the tree and need my bike to be fast, something always happens to it. But Peggy works really hard and she deserves it. She really did the job."

"My congratulations to Peggy Llewellyn and the entire Rush Racing Team for pulling off a great clutch performance during eliminations!" echoed Smith. "Hats off to George Bryce and Shane Maloney for the great tune up and coaching job! We're very pleased to have Peggy join the final four. Her addition as a woman riding a torquey S&S Buell out of the G2 stable will definitely add to the excitement.

"I am disappointed we missed out again getting past the semifinals. We were off on the third round clutch tune-up and Chip was late on the light. Carrying our consistency through the elimination rounds has been our biggest problem of late and we are committed to work toward succeeding in the next race at Las Vegas. Chip won his first national event at Vegas in 2004, then again in 2005 and we look to make it happen again. The overall performance of the S&S powered V-Twins has proven these bikes to be very competitive. We achieved our goal of making the final four in the Countdown to One and actually moved up a notch from fourth to third place."

"Mission accomplished," agreed G2 co-owner George Bryce. "Chip is in the top three of the Countdown. That was a goal that we set, and the fact that he gets to start over while he's peaking at the right time and has such a fast bike points to the good work by a whole organization of people at S&S Cycle and G2. George Smith is doing a fantastic job of tuning the bike, and Ken Johnson is doing a great job of preparing the bike."

"Overall, I'm pretty satisfied," said Ellis. "We did what we needed to do and got into the final four."

"We were all very, very touched and concerned with our champion John Force," added Bryce, referring to the serious Dallas racing accident involving drag racing's biggest star. "We thought about it a lot all day and wondered if he's OK. We want to make sure everybody prays for his speedy recovery, and for him and his family to know how important he is to us and the POWERade drag racing series."

Smith echoed Bryce's sentiments and finished by looking forward to Vegas. "The DRAG Specialties dealer hospitality will be present at Las Vegas, and we look forward to a solid performance for all our sponsors and fans. My brother Ken and wife Evelyn will be joining us the last two races. Ken is part owner at S&S and a big supporter of the G2 DRAG Specialties/S&S bike, and we look forwarded to having him and Evelyn with us in the pits."

Chip Ellis and the DRAG Specialties/S&S Cycle team race next at the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals, October 25-28_at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, Nevada.
