D'Aprile Races Back Into Championship Hunt

September 12, 2006 - Epping, NH - If the Torco Competitionplus.com Pro Modified class wasn't the toughest and tightest points chase in IHRA history, Tommy D'Aprile just put in his bid to make the championship battle a little tougher.

The Port Charlotte Florida rookie driver fought back a midseason slump in his Evan Knoll sponsored "Support Our Troops" Corvette, posting the biggest jump of any team (8th to 5th) after his semi final appearance at the Amalie Oil North American Nationals. The top 5 teams are separated by 87 points or about four rounds of competition.

After his first DNQ and a couple of first round losses, D'Aprile hopes his Quain Stott Drag Racing prepared, Torco powered entry, is back on the right track. "Winning the first round was almost like winning the race," said D'Aprile. "It felt good to get back in there and mix it up a little. Hopefully we've put ourselves in a position to challenge for the championship."

With three races remaining, D'Aprile may get his wish. During the past two races, all of the top five team have missed opportunities to take the lead. "I spoke with Glen [Kerunsky] and Jimmy [Rector, crew chief for Danny Rowe] after the race," said Quain Stott, teammate and car owner. "I told them none of us must want this championship. We're just leaving the door open for someone behind us."

D'Aprile hopes he can take advantage of any chances offered to his team. "Drag racing is about taking advantage of opportunities when they are presented to you. Sometimes you can only do the best that you can and you hope it's enough. I just can't thank Evan Knoll, LeeBoy and Quain Stott enough for giving me a chance to race this car. We're having a lot of fun this season, I can't wait to see what happens over the next few races."
