I am more curious as to how much damage a race car can have before they don't allow it.

A crack in the nose is not sufficient to DQ the car. It nudged the divider, but there was no real damage to the car, just the nose.

The final was not the run where the damage occured. But he did win that one too.

didn't we just go through this with matt latino DQ a little over a month ago?
i guess 'steering wheel coming off during burnout' doesn't apply? not taking sides here, just pointing out that
very recently a DQ took place for a somewhat similar situation. how do the track officials know that the steering wheel
has been re-secured in place properly to make a safe pass? i thought i heard you can cross the centerline on a burnout?
can you graze the wall on a burnout and still race? obviously you can hit the center boards without a steering wheel and still race.
was this an nhra official making the call? or a PM official making the call? (not a mission foods pro class)

Latino was DQ’d for taking his helmet and other safety gear off at the end of the run before exiting the racing surface.

Yes, it clearly states in the rulebook that crossing the centerline on a burnout is not a DQ.

NHRA officials run the entire race, there are not separate officials for the different classes/categories.

Wasnt Matt Latino busted for removing safety gear before he exited the track?
if you watch a certain youtube channel of a top fuel car you can see them removing gear before they turn off all the time, not helmet, just gloves and raises the helmet visor

am aware of the latino violation ...... josh, just pointing out that something kind of important fell off a car once
it was fired and began the process of the race, not to mention striking a semi-fixed object on the track.
and now everybody knows.

The starting line staff/starter has full control of the starting line/racetrack. They have the ultimate call on whether to send a car down track. While not extremely common, steering wheels are known to come off occasionally. It’s not hard to re-install the wheel and make a safe pass. The starter felt the car was safe to send, so he allowed it.
