If Nolan Ryan had some Run support back in his 70's heyday, he would have 300 wins! Back in '73 when he had 383 Strikeouts, he had an ERA of 2.70 and still lost 17 decisions!

Cooks right Joe, Ryan won 324 and lost 292 with a pretty impressive 3.19 era. Talk about no run support! I saw him pitch against the Mariners and he was impressive in person (almost as impressive as Clemens, but not quite).

I know everyone has there opinion, but mine is that Nolan Ryan is the greatest pitcher the game has ever seen. People say look at his record, he lost almost as many games as he won and I say look at who he played for. So just like you guys are saying, he had no run support the majority of his career. I have had the priviledge of seeing Mr Ryan pitch a game many times in my life and I treasure each one of them.

And if some of yall dont know, Nolan is getting pretty big in the beef business. He owns a huge beefmaster ranch and supplies the beef for alot of ballparks too. I heard yesterday he is now a Beef Ambassador for the US to overseas countries.

And to think, my Mets gave up him and traded him, and others, for Jim Fregosi. When will Fregosi's ticket for Cooperstown be punched? Seaver and Ryan together could have won a lot of games together in NY.

Excellent point...

Bob Gibson is noted for having the greatest season (1969) in modern baseball history. That year his E.R.A. was a microscopic 1.12...yet he lost 9 games. Keep in mind that during that era of baseball managers weren't near as prone to 'go to the pen'. Imagine losing 9 games with a 1.12 E.R.A.! Back then you pitched a full game...win or lose.

I realize this is subject to debate, but if I were going to pick ONE pitcher to win ONE game, I'm going with Gibby hands down. I've never seen anyone more competitive than Gibson. His long time batttery mate was Tim McCarver. Tim tells the story that one particular game Gibby was getting a little trouble and McCarver called time-out to go to the mound. He said Gibby yelled to him "what are you doing?" as Tim was walking to the mound, Tim responed that he wanted to talk about the current situation, but Gibby interupted with "get you ass back behind the plate...I've got work to do"! What a warrior...
