Cory McClenathan Leaving DSR Following Season End

Wish Someone would drag Ed & Ercie off the ranch and watch what the "OLD" man could do just running a team and tuning a race car

His 1-year crew chief (who filled in right after Fuzzy Carter passed away) told me Eddie nearly did exactly that, back around 03-04, somewhere in there. The plan was to hire an 'up-and-coming young black driver' but the sponsorship particulars never gelled. I never found out why, or exactly who the intended driver was, although I assume it was J.R. Todd. Speaking of Todd, I'd like to see him back in action, too. Good guy; good racer.

Eddie's pretty happy doing what he's doing. I'm sure he still has a place in his heart for drag racing, but that fire is pretty much out. Too bad; he was a legend by all accounts.

Yea screw Fram,im done buying there products.
My god ... some of you people take this crap way too seriously. It still just a sport. Fram is still a sponsor in the "game" why should your apparent allegiance to the brand change because of a driver switch. Support those that support the NHRA regardless of where they spend their marketing $$.

DS continues to prove to be a shrewd business man. He proves that again and again in the Nitrogate affair, his dealings with all employees including drivers, the fact he transfers the drivers sponsor contracts to DSR and then disposes of the drivers, moves crew and crew chiefs around and out on a regular basis and so on. He proves again and again that he has little or no regard for the welfare of drag racing in general or for anyone or anything involved other than his own personal intersts. Perhaps this is the correct posture to have but it's one that I personally find offensive. The only one that ever put him in his place was Alan Johnson and good for him.

Wow Jim, what rock has your car been parked under?
Folks do "sports" for the love and not the money. My 12 year old grandaughter played 6 softball games in 40 degree weather last Saturday for the sport of it. And they won the championship!
Professional Drag Racing has been a business for longer than most of the folks here on the mater have been alive. Even the Sportsman Classes have become pretty damn professional to boot.

To race in any of the pro classes, especially nitro, and not treat it as a business, would be financial suicide. I'm a fan of Big Shoe, as well as Cory, and whatever happened is between them. But, I'm pretty sure that if Don didn't care at all about the sport, he could just spend all his time at his company, or whatever the heck he wanted to do. And if it were just about Tony, he could field just the Army car and spare himself a lot of grief.

Totally agree Rich ... my frustration lies with folks (fans), not teams or drivers, who act like children and "take their ball and go home". My point was simply that as fans, many on this site take the results of this "game" far too seriously. It is a business, period. On that point you and I agree. DSR, or any other owner, doesn't need fan (Mater) approval when making business decisions. It is thier team/business to run in a manner that provides them with the best possible ROI. But for people to bad mouth products and/or threaten to stop using a product simply because thier favorite driver is not in the car any longer seems very childish to me. If people don't want to root for that car/team any longer ... fine. That's thier choice. But the product and company is staying in the sport and spending thier Marketing $$ in our sport. That is a good thing. Bad mouthing and boycotting the product can only hurt that decision.

While I don't think anyone can deny that Don loves the sport, he's also very successful at it and just like other successful businessmen, he has expanded his empire.

Tell Sheldon Adelson to stop building more casinos when he already has the Bellagio and he'll say you're nuts. Tell Steve Jobs to stick to the computer market when he has plans to release the iPhone. See what I mean?

Successful people are very confident in their abilities to succeed in whatever market they endeavor into.

It's like when people are rich enough to live 10 lifetimes on what they have yet they continue to work and make money. After awhile, it's not about the money but the power that comes along with the money.

I don't know about you but it's my $$ and I'll spend it in any manner I see fit and with who I choose. If I don't agree with something a company is doing or saying then I may well choose to take my $$ elsewhere. If it hurts them or their involvment in drag racing then so be it. It's a direct result of a decision they made and they should experiernce the results of that decision.

don't forget our tax system - profits taken are taxed
- profits driven back into company
are expensed and not taxed..........our tax system
almost insures that a profitable companies expand or pay larger taxes.

You clearly haven't spent any time on a NASCAR board, or an F1 board, or any other kind of forum for any sport. Nitromater is the tamest of the tame.

This site certainly has a bunch of wishy washy hand wringing can't we just all get along posters.

Ask Virgil Hartmann how much Fram paid him to race top fuel. They don't pay squat and it's unfortunate that they get such a big billing on the side of the car.

Maybe we should tell Fram we want a younger CEO in their company...hate it when companies do this...JMHO

I'm just going to vote with my $. Been buying Quaker State and a Fram filter at Advance Auto for years now. Now, I'll switch to something else. Fram sponsored a driver I like very much so they got my business. Soon they won't and soon I won't support them. :/

Dear Fram, the larger percentage of folks that still work on their on cars/trucks are 40 to 65. Which means they pick your product off the shelves at the parts store. Of course I'm 36, but you understand.

Signed
Former Fram Buyer.

A short story with a moral. Several years back, I was manager for the local Coop feed mill. We had a great rep from Purina that came around...just checked in...didn't push hard for a sale but let you know he knew his product and could help you out. Neither here nor there but this fella had lost all of his one arm in a car wreck as a teenager and I always thought it took a pretty tough guy to gather himself up and make something of himself while maintaining a great sense of humor about his "situation." One day he stopped in to let me know Purina was pulling his commission and putting him on a really sucky base pay and he would probably be moving on to something else cause he had worked hard to get where he was with the company and couldn't live on what he would be making. A few weeks later, another guy stopped in and while nice enough in demeanor, I stopped him in midsentence and told him that I had dealt with Steve before and knew what Purina had done to him and I had decided that was the last business I would do with Purina. He tried to explain and I told him to save his breath, that I held no grudge agaist him but he would do well to take my message back to the powers that be and let them know there are still people with ethics in the world and they would do well to develope some. Same applies here folks. It may be the "modern" world but if know what is right and wrong, you'll send these guys down the road.

The same Quaker State and Advance Auto Parts that used to sponsor the Pedregons? QS has scaled way back and Advance is out of the game altogether now, right? I buy Castrol Syntec and a Fram at O'Reilly. I also buy Lucas slick mist and other products whenever I can, too (they don't seem to stock it regularly, for some reason). I have to drive by an Advance AP to get to my local O'Reilly, and although they don't sponsor a particular team, they headline a ton of drag racing events. And since Advance doesn't sponsor Cruz any more (or anyone), I opt not to shop there.

We vote with our wallets, gang...and in Chicago, they vote with the registration cards of the deceased ;)
