Connolly drops to second (1 Viewer)

Pomona, Friday: Dave Connolly didn't improve his 6.660-second elapsed time from Thursday and was knocked into second position on a hot Friday afternoon as qualifying continued for Sunday's Auto Club of Southern California Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

While Connolly's Cagnazzi Racing Lucas Oil/Charter Communications Chevy Cobalt turned in a time of 6.671 seconds, Jason Line took No. 1 with a run of 6.658 seconds.

Connolly is attempting to win the race and finish second overall, giving Victor Cagnazzi's team a one-two finish in NHRA POWERade Series points. Jeg Coughlin, who clinched the title, is ninth (6.687) after the second day and Ron Krisher, the third Cagnazzi Racing driver, is fourth overall (6.668).

"This was not as good a day as yesterday, for sure," said Tommy Utt, the team's unflappable crew chief. "But Jason made a good run. Saturday morning's session could be the best one of qualifying. We're okay with where we are . . . as long as we stay ahead of Greg (Anderson)."

If Connolly qualifies ahead of Anderson, who is sixth, and wins the race, he will achieve his goal of second place.
