Garlits was there most of the day Saturday signing autographs. Most fans have no idea he is basically deaf now, and they all try and talk to him. He did his best to answer with his latest girlfriend standing by to help interpret, and guide the fans to speak into a device that spells out what they are saying so he can read it. He put in a long day, and there was always a line at his table. You gotta hand it to him at 93, he and his girlfriend drove their RV from FL all the way to Famoso. Not sure why he doesn't fly. He wasn't towing a race car this time, but was there with the Sonny Messner Swamp Rat (based in So CA) he built for Sonny some years ago.
Saw the Snake, Ron Capps, Cruz Pedregon (driving his California Charger re-creation that he brings out from time to time), Herm Peterson, Richard Tharp, Ivo, Larry Dixon, Jr - there with his mom Pat, and many of the usual old drag racers that are still with us. That number has greatly diminished now, with few of our drag racing heros from the 60's and 70's still around to attend this event.
Ron Capps was with one of his sons. He didn't seem like the jovial Capps of old on Sat, like you would think on a day off from the Big Show, and I think the stress of being a team owner (and one who seems to be having to replace way too many bodies this year) may be wearing on him.
Lots of hot back up babes on Sat, all dressed up in skimpy outfits for Halloween. The fans could hardly keep their eyes on the fuel cars when the BUGs were doing their thing.
All in all, a good day at the drags. I'm glad I was able to make it.
