Canada’s “TJ” to Run Alcohol Funny Car

January 17, 2008 - > The Ontario-based KonRodz Racing team, owned by Spiro Kontos has announced some aggressive plans and enhancements for 2008.

The aspiring new team, which made some good advances during its rookie 2007 season racing a Chevy Monte Carlo Alcohol Funny Car with versatile driver Scott Wildgust behind the wheel, has announced that T.J. Schippling (Tavistock, ON) will assume driver duties in 2008.

Schippling, who at 29 years old is considered one of Canada’s top up-and-coming drivers, will graduate to the AFC class from Top Dragster racing. He was the 2005 track champion for TD at Grand Bend Motorplex and during early 2006 upgraded his competition license racing Randy Meyer’s NHRA injected-nitro TAD dragster.

“Seven years ago when I was first getting a license out in California – my dream was to get behind the wheel of an Alcohol Funny Car,” he revealed. “I’m very pleased that Spiro has selected me as his driver. He has assembled a very impressive team with the best people and components. I’ve worked with Al Billes before (team tuner & consultant). We all know his capabilities. This team definitely has the potential to do well and win races.”

“TJ” also revealed his personal desire to be the next formidable Canadian driver within Canada’s reputed history in the class. “For whatever reason Canada has always produced top notch drivers in the Alcohol Funny Car class,” he added. “It’s very much in the back of my mind that I would like to become the next Herb Rodgers, Roger Bateman or Rob Atchison.”

Schippling expects to begin testing in his new ride prior to the commencement of the 2008 season. Current plans are that the KonRodz Racing team will campaign a full IHRA Championship season schedule.

Spiro Kontos, who is the owner and Recyco Environmental Inc and Direct Waste Systems Inc., is very pleased with the selection of his new driver.

“The most important part of racing is having a positive attitude and a huge drive to win,” said Kontos. “I feel that T.J. has all that and will help take this team closer to the final round and possibly to winning events. We’re very pleased to welcome him to our racing family.”
