IMO, tuning the motor not to blow up nowadays probably means that you're not in it to win it!
Mike,
What do you mean, "Nowadays"? I've been around this sport since the 50s and have never seen a time when the fuel racers were not blowing them up! Only difference I see is with the horsepower increases it tends to drive the pieces further into the ground!!

Paul - I guess I was more referring to the fact that fuel racers seem to run on a shorter wick today comparatively speaking, and that blowing them up is much more frequent now (not that the fuel racers didn't go for it in the past). And yes, it may "seem" like there are more explosions nowadays given the magnitude when they do let go!

I don't know how many fuel cars Larry has tuned other then nostalgia cars, but, if Larry has the tune up to win races and not blow anything up...then i'm sure there are plenty of teams that would love to have him on board.

don't know the exact number but the volume of air and fuel into the motor has to have at least doubled in the
last 20-30 years.....same size bomb with more explosive under greater pressure....next weakest link....the body.
if you look at modern FC's from an outside perspective; why would someone not think this is an exercise
in futility; trying to put a $50k carbon fiber body over a 10,000hp motor running on rocket fuel that has about
a 10% chance of being blown to bits @ every race.

I have never tuned a nostalgia car in my life. Nitro tunning is much more detailed than when I was doing it, more to keep track of and many more systems to fail, I'm retired, I leave it to the rich guys.

People needed to wear helmets at Indy when walking near the finish line. It rained parts during qualif. We took all the parts we had and if we came home with any left it was a miracle. Now the parts are so much better and stronger than back in the day and the budgets allow replacement prior to failure. A luxury most didn't have before the big $$ sponsors.

Jack Beckman, Traxxas Finals at Indy. We were standing along the fence pit side as far down as they let you, and pieces of that body only missed us by 50 feet or so.

But blowing up and wining is a pretty rare deal.

Yes I know ,been there done that, however that isn't the object of the deal is it.

Getting back on topic......I think they may be on to something. Only time will tell if it works as
expected, but at least someone is trying something. Good on ya team KALITTA!!!

Great idea until someone in the stands gets hit with one.

Position on the car is low enough to catch wall first, and the hinge system with a tether will more than likely slow down the velocity of departure if one does go bang... There's more of a chance of getting done in by a Champion 40 cal that got blown out of the head at the stripe- at least those have the arc trajectory already designated!

Since they are still experimental, the possibility that they have already tried that is a 1 in 4 possibility, Paul... We won't know until the device gets implimented as to why they determined that this particular one worked...

obviously not looking forward to an actual test, but applaud the kalittas for introducing this prototype.
wondering if the body has been stiffened at corner in addition to these burst panels?
you know if this deal works the 1000 frame/second camera shots could be fairly awesome;
a fire breathing dragon shooting fireballs to both sides???
