Memphis, TN (8/18/06) -- When rain and oppressive conditions limited the pro classes to just one pass on Friday, Phil Burkart made the most of it in his "Madman Murray" Monte Carlo, posting a solid 4.943 to land in the No. 7 spot after one day. His speed, clocking in at 310.55 mph, was the fastest of the session in the Funny Car class.
"It felt good, I know that," Burkart said. "I use the word 'felt' on purpose, because between my visor fogging up, the lights not being all that great, sweat dripping in my eyes, and the front end of the car dancing all the way to the finish line, I didn't see all that much. I could see enough to know it was safe and it was in the middle, so I just kept my foot down and drove it right through the lights.
"Knowing that it's going to be like a furnace out here tomorrow, it's great to be in the top half after Friday. I'm not sure where that huge rain storm came from today, so I guess another could brew up tomorrow and alter the schedule around. If not, it's going to be pretty hot for both sessions tomorrow, so it will be a pretty big challenge."
