(9/3/06)Indianapolis -- Phil Burkart piloted the "Madman Murray" Monte Carlo to a pair of strong runs on Saturday, running competitively in the afternoon sunshine with a 4.871, and then powering to a big 4.760 under the lights on Saturday night. Though he improved his best time by more than 2-hundredths on the last pass, he ended the night one slot lower than he began it, and will enter Sunday's final two qualifying sessions from the No. 10 position.
"Two very good passes, and two really consistent runs, and I'm pretty charged up right now," Burkart said. "We didn't hit grand slam, but we got down there right in the thick of things and I think we're peaking at the right time. On this last one, it made a little move on me down there, but I brought it back okay and kept all eight lit right through the lights. At this point, it almost doesn't matter who you run on Monday, because this is a record field and everybody in the show on Monday is going to be big-time fast.
"Speaking of that, our teammates over there (Del Worsham and the red CSK team) are really having a hard time of it here, and all of us are hoping they can put it all together tomorrow and put a number on the board. They've got to be pulling their hair out, but they just need to stay confident and stick with the plan. That red car is fast, very powerful, and it looks like they're just going through a learning curve on how to tame it down right now. If anyone can figure it out, it's Del and Chuck Worsham."
