<P>Iconic husband and wife Drag Racing team Reed Racing have been keeping themselves busy during the ANDRA Championship Drag Racing off-season by planning their assault on the 2008/2009 Series which begins in mid September.
In big news for the team, they have announced that they have acquired the sister car to team boss Steven Reed’s 3500 horsepower Camaro with the plan of running a two car Top Alcohol Funny Car team in the near future.
The vehicle is the former Fabietti Racing and 2007 Winternationals runner up vehicle, with team driver Debbie Reed in line to trade her current Dragster for the new purchase.
If all goes to plan this will mean both Steven and Debbie will be behind the wheel of identical specification machines in the professional Top Alcohol bracket under the Reed Racing banner.
“I will still be racing my Dragster at the Australian National’s at the Western Sydney International Dragway, and will then take the new Funny Car out to Willowbank Raceway when we return to Brisbane to see how I adjust to it,” Debbie Reed said.
“It will be the first time in around 20 years that I have driven a front engined race car and I have spent my entire Group One career in a Dragster so we will have to see how I go getting used to it all.”
“If I am happy with the feel of the new car the plan is then to campaign the Reed Racing team with two Top Alcohol Funny Cars.”
“We will still be keeping the Dragster though as a spare car and may have Daniel (Reed) race it for the team at selected Rounds of Championship when his work commitments with V8 Supercars permit.”
Debbie’s husband Steven Reed is now currently in the process of setting up the new car for her after the team took possession of it over the weekend.
As well as updating to a more modern vehicle, he can also see many other benefits in running the new Funny Car alongside his existing one.
“When I first purchased my Camaro Funny Car from the USA around 18 months ago, Maurice (Fabietti) also brought the sister car out which is identical to the one I race,” Steven Reed said.
“At the moment Debbie’s Dragster and my Funny Car run completely different engine combinations and setups and we can’t really compare any data or interchange many of the components between them.”
“But now this isn’t the case, we will have two state of the art machines where everything will be identical except the seating positions. This will help us with our parts inventory and also on the race track with us having twice the data to use for our tune ups.”
“Another benefit for us will be having a complete spare Top Alcohol car ready to race, as well as an extra driver in Daniel (Reed), who is the 2007 Australian Supercharged Outlaws Champion and is licensed to drive both Top Alcohol Funny Cars and Dragsters.”
The Reed Racing team will next be taking to the track for the 2008/2009 ANDRA Top Alcohol Championship Drag Racing Series season opener, the Australian Nationals, held at the Western Sydney International Dragway from the 12th-14th September.
