Great ink, Nancy.

You've certainly earned everything you have going on..impressive for sure.

Nice article. You're lucky enough to be doing two things I wish I could: working in a studio and racing a fast car. I've been into home audio for as long as I can remember. My dad has pictures of me at 2 or 3 sitting in front of the stereo just mesmerized by the reel to reel. In another pic I've fallen asleep in a chair with a pair of the old Marantz electrostatic headphones strapped to my head. :D I got hooked at a very young age!

I've always wished I would have pursued working in a studio. Growing up in Iowa didn't give me any oppurtunity to do it though. Instead I just enjoy the fruits of others work and listening to the good music they make.

Slipknot came from Iowa and there are only a few studios there that I know of, but good ones.

Studio work can be demanding sometimes, but it's WAY better than running a cash register and has afforded me to pave my own way, I guess you'd say.

I'm very blessed and lucky for that.

And owning a car / team, I never realized what hard work it is until I did it, so my hats off to all who attempt it (no matter what class) and even more to those that have been successful to be doing it full time. I hope to be there soon too.

Thanks for all the kind words!!!!

Great article Nancy!!! Its great seeing a "local" make it big!!! I've always wanted to go back to Frank Hawleys and get my Alcohol license! I went back in 2000 for my super comp license and went back to the shop afterwards and checked out the alky dragster and funny car! Is your shop out in Oak Hill area? There used to be a guy out that way that did a BUNCH of high performance work by the name of Bill Reed, but I think he may have sold his shop.

Hi Tim, never heard of him, but we've only been here a year.

We're closer to Dripping than Oak Hill and yes the car is here. We have two plus acres so it helps a lot.

thanks for the kind words,

Nancy

Nice read, thanks for posting up the link.

I love the caption on the drumset shot, it says you're playing a solo and sure enough, there's a damn guitar player stepping all over the drummer, lol!

Oh yeah, check out the tilt on those ImperialStar toms, damn! That makes my wrists hurt just looking at it. :D

He's a good guitar player too!!!!!

Steve Oswald, and I THINK we were playing Freebird, I'm pretty sure thats when the picture was snapped!!

I had a composer friend comment about the microphone, he didn't know I ever played and he was blown away about that.

(btw--don't play anymore, no time, too many races to run and albums to master, just in case you were curious):D:D

Shure SM10A by the looks of it? Were those things awful or what? I remember selling a few of them until the Crown series came out... those were somewhat unsightly but at least they had some semblance of quality sound about them. Thankfully things have come a long, long way since then in headworn microphones.

I always used a 57 with a windscreen (or 58 on occasion) on a boom / gooseneck and would swing it in and out with my left as needed. I tried using the headworn stuff but just hated it. They left me unable to shout obscenities at those nitwit guitar players who weren't smart enough to keep their axe in tune without announcing the issue to the entire world, lol!

Maybe if all us musician (or ex musician) Maters agree to posting old onstage pics, I'll dig some up, although I'm not sure my ego is up to the task of exposing some of that late 80's stuff. :o

I think it was a 12A (matched the 58 which better suited my voice) my x had to use the 57 for vocal.

I'd write more, but I'm whoo'd out right now. I'll check back in over the weekend.

ttyl
