Anyone remember Capt. Jack McClures rocket go kart?

I remember it well. I think I still have the magazines stories about his record runs.

I was really into karting in the 60's and I raced sprint karts and then enduro karts at Bridgehampton, Thompson, Watkins Glen and the old V.I.R. and Summit Point tracks and then my son got into in the mid 80's we I started all over again.

That rocket kart was very cool and scary at the same time.

I saw it run at Fremont...standing next to me was an interested spectator named Garlits !! He shook his head and walked away !!
I wonder what the Captain is doing now ?

Jim, you'll dig my story then, especially if you know '60s karts. My dad ran an altered in the 60s-70s so I of course was ruined from the start, lol. After bugging the s**t out of him for a year, he surprises me with what he thinks is a "go-kart". He got it from a buddy who lettered a lot of race cars from our area back then. Well it was a Rupp Dart Kart, with TWO West Bend engines, each with 2 Tillotson carbs, and, it ran on nitro. So it was really a serious race kart for a grown up, I was around 8. We fired up just one engine, and the thing was vibrating and popping and just super loud, my dad shut it off and just said, "these things are coming off right now and we're putting a lawnmower engine on it!". We both wish we had kept that kart all these years later, would be a pretty neat vintage deal. Oh and we saw McClure run his kart at our home track at the '72 Empire Nationals, just amazing.

According to the link, he will be making runs in the totally revamped kart in two weeks at the Man Cup Nationals in So. Georgia. I met him last year at this event when he had the kart on display.

Nuncio:
I remember Micky Rupp from his Dart Kart day's and on my website under karting I still sell the Dart Kart decals to guys who restore the old karts which as really become a big business.

We all used to be members of the I.K.F. karting association back in the 60's but in the early 70's friends of mine decided to start the World Karting Association and they told me at the time they were only going to run 4 cycle engines and I told them they were crazy because we had all run McCullough engines with two carbs on them in the open light class.

I was wrong racing 4 cycle engines really became very popular and the W.K.A. became the number one karting association in the world.

Well, that's one race we were both at -smile-

As I remember, the announcer made it sound like he ran off the end of the track or something, but probably was just hype, but one did lose sight of the tiny thing in the smoke and steam after it shut off.

ps....You wonder what the Captain is doing now? That's what the article was about. He got permission to make an 1/8th mile squirt in the rocket kart at Motec Word Finals In Florida coming up.
