Allen Johnson has clinched?

I was wondering how many points are still out there. Tried finding on nhra.com, but couldn't find anything listed on the "points" section.

10 for qualifying run
3 for fastest run each q round (12)
20 to qualify
80 for the race
20 for national record.

I am up to 142.

Pretty sure all AJ has to do is qualify. Didn't see the tv coverage either so not sure if they said anything.

Am I off in all of this?

So thrilled for AJ!!!!!!!

Add 8 points for qualifying #1 and you get the 150 Karl mentioned.

It would take absolute mineshaft conditions for Line to set the record in Pomona anyways. AJ doesn't even have to qualify realistically. Congrats to the team. Ironically this is Mopars first pro stock championship since 1994 with Darrell Alderman. AJ started as a Mopar independent in 1995, the same year the factory team suffered their break in.

Well, I must say..........

I'm a die-hard GM guy, period. But I just can't help having some admiration in seeing them sew this deal up. Unlike many others before, the Johnson clan stuck with the Mopar combination through thick and thin, and despite some very thin times over the years, they persevered. And that perseverence has led them to now having a car that can win anywhere. I was also impressed with how AJ tightened things up behind the wheel on the starting line down the stretch as well, not giving it away when he had the best car.

Kudos to that team, Roy Johnson in particular. Very humble man and I can't imagine anyone more deserving of the world title. ;)

Sean, as a die hard Mopar guy, that's a nice post, and pretty much sums up Allen's ride with Mopar.

i read a story about how years ago Roy or Allen inquired about leasing engines from the Wayne County Dodges and were all but ignored. i wonder if The Johnson's chuckle at how things have turned around, given what became of Wayne county and now, how Allen and Roy have reached the top of the class and ironically are leasing engines to others.

Very well stated Sean. I have always been impressed with your appreciation of 'other' competitors. You are a very good sport.

I remember spending time with Allen in the early years at the Topeka race. He spoke of how difficult all this was (at that time). They were running the wedge motor, and making the shows, when David Nickens and Larry Morgan were running the new HEMI engines with corporate backing. This was back when the car had Amoco on it, but it was essentially run out of their own pocket. Those were tough times, but they hung in there. Another important component to their success was not being dropped by Mopar during the bankruptcy and subsequent sale by Mercedes. I was amazed then that they were kept on board. Sure glad they were.

Mathematically, he has not clinched, but he practically he has. Mine shaft conditions and a perfect weekend would be needed for Jason Line and horrible luck for Allen Johnson is the only way possible for Allen Johnson not to lock this up.

I talked with Roy and Allen in Bristol back in about 2006, and I tell you what, they were as nice as can be and in no way full of themselves. This deal is a big payoff for their hard work over the years when the first few years were especially tough for them doing it on their own.

Sean, great post. I feel exactly the same way. Perseverance is the perfect word in describing Allen and Roy Johnson and this great team. Like they used to tell us in school, "Winners Never Quit and Quitters Never Win." Yeah, I'm old. ;)
