When I was racing, I refused to put "contingency" decals on any of my race cars. They are a sham and only benefit the car owner if the car wins or runner-ups at an event. In the meantime, the contingency sponsor gets their sticker on almost every car in the class for "free". Do the math, in a super class, the decal might appear on more than 100 vehicles, but only the winner and runner-up are paid to run the decals:)

I applaud Alan and the sheik for not plastering their beautiful race cars with cheap contingency decals.

Couldn't agree more. We haven't a single sticker on our car.

The way we figure it, we might (just might) win the contingency lottery and take in something like $5k over the next several years -- if we win/runner up, and we do it at a contingency-paying event, and we have dozens of stickers all over the car, and we fill out the paperwork, and we wait out the checks, and we manage to cross all the t's and dot all the i's. A lot like product rebates.

Or we can run a good looking car. Easy choice.

They dont have them b/c they dont need them. I think all there cars, top fueler, funny car and most of the pro mods are beautiful.

And by the way, incase anybody wants to know what Al Anabi stands for I will tell you. GO MAROON. Its the national color of Qatar and the reason all there cars (but 2) are maroon.

I agree that contingency stickers aren't great looking when plastered all over a car, but IMO they're no sham. Ask racers that have won a lot if they make a difference to their budgets. I think I heard Dan Fletcher say that a win in Super Stock was worth around $18K. Now you folks know how much of that is actual purse money, so do the math. If a company is willing to pay winners and r/u than there's nothing wrong with them getting visibility from the cars that don't make the finals. JMO.

I can see those guys not having contingency stickers because I don't think they need the bonuses that come with it, Im pretty sure they have all the funding they need lol. As for my s/c i have all the stickers I can because Im not there to look good or win a car show, Im there to win and bring in some money for my team

How many people have the win record of Dan Fletcher, though?

Not 100-percent sure on this, so don't quote me, but I have heard repeatedly from racers, that NHRA pockets any and all moneies NOT paid out by contingency sponsors when nobody wins with they product/decal. The sponsor pays, alright... they just don't pay the racer.

In that vein, NHRA has made it increasingly difficult for rightful contingency money winners to collect, by increasing exponentially, the kinds and numbers of hoops they must jump through in order to get their winnings.

If they fail to cross one "t," or to dot one "i" the money goes to NHRA.

It's a sad situation...

I know some companies are very slow to pay out, but I never heard of money going directly to the NHRA. Maybe someone knows different, but I gotta say this is an unfounded rumor.

The "sponsor decals" on our dragster are just that.

These are the compaies who have helped us with either financial or informational assistance in the past.

Think of it as "Pay Back"!! :D

I agree, and was just joking with my earlier reply - to a point. Scratches got stickers - with a matching on to the other side, to look purposeful...

I remember that there was no question whether some companies would have had exposure on the cars in the past. Mainly because of the relationships and gratitude for the help of the manufacturers. It wasn't all about the money back in the day...

I know as of a few years ago as a sponsor you had to "pay-out" a certain amount of money. If you did not the difference was owed to the sanctioning body. For example if they required you to pay out 20K in contingency and you only had 15K worth of winners/runners up you'd owe them 5K at the end of the season. I do believe that has changed now, or at least it has for some sanctioning bodies.

If I remember correctly the Jordan brothers ran a TA/FC a few years back and didn't run contingincy decals on their car (just the series sponsor decal only for the obvious reason) because they didn't want their beautiful car (which it was) cluttered up with decals.

Here is how it works with NHRA and some others. When you sign up to be a contingency sponsor, you agree to pay out a minumum. This is a good thing. Otherwise people could post for something no one would ever use, and get the free publicity and all the free event tickets that sponsors get and wind up never having to pay out a dime to the racers.

I did PSB and back then everyone used my parts so I always went over my minimum. If you dont. you have to pay NHRA only the difference between what you paid out to racers and your minimum. The minimum is a fraction of what you post. When I did PSB I believe it was $1200 for the year. We got that much in free weekend passes from NHRA.

It is a very good policy. It keeps the freeloaders out. I quit when I saw the Harleys coming in as I did not make any parts for gas burning Harleys.

Now, if you look at the stickers on the PSB wheelie bar panels, you will see that he entire motorcycle aftermarket is out.

Jay, Thank you for posting, hopefully this will stop some of the NHRA bashing!
