Advance Auto to drop sponsorship of NHRA team

exactly . . . no one on here knows why they DIDN'T keep Cruz or decided TO drop him regardless if your name is Paul or John or whatever.
Simply put, if a new management crew is in then the first thing they will look at is where the money is going . . . and if they see it going in a direction that isn't making as great of a return as they want (be it money OR attitude) then it will get dropped.
Another one who doesn't get it and should stay away from their keyboard. The population in the village is growing.
I get it all Paul, dont worry about me i am in the middle of the bad economy hell in NYC. Economy sucks, the NHRA does crap for sponsors, but i am just glad Cruz lost his, i am upset the NHRA is losing a sponsor but not Cruz!
May be the Advance dropping was done before all of the crying the Pedregons did but i think it will hurt them in their future hunt for sponsors.
But since Paul thinks i should put my keyboard away let me say this:
The NHRA tv package sucks, how can anyone besides the Nitro teams try and get sponsors. Prostock cars and bikes get no respect from the NHRA.
Have you ever read how much money it would cost a sponsor to match one nascar race on TV? nascar may be boring to some but they are smart business people.
Why would a company who can sponsor a race or two sponsor a car?they would probably get more tv time than being on the car.
Drag racing needs to figure out a new marketing plan.

cruz and his attitude and constant crying was not a great repersentation for the company. hey cruz the karma train just arrived at the station- all aboard!!!!!

Wish some folks would understand that the Pedregons honesty and stirring the pot from time to time is good for the sport and entertaining.

No Glenn, not employed with Advance but have several friends in upper management there ..
I was always thanking them for being involved in the sport and they were kind of amazed that I was such a die hard follower of the sport .
The one I referred to that has left is very close with Cruz and thinks the world of the " Cruzer ." They still stay in touch . Lets just say he was very involved with the marketing aspect of the company and was very invoved in their decision making process. They were very pleased with their association with Cruz and Tony .
As has been previously posted , Corporate America is always looking for a return on their investment . When leadership changes at the top , anything can happen and usually does .
I will say if Advance had made the CSK deal happen, they most assuredly would have had a presence ( maybe larger ) in the sport of Drag racing . I will miss Advance participation in NHRA Drag Racing .

Your exactly right. Happened years ago when I worked for Firestone. They bring in really stupid people to get rid of really good people. Worked for them for 18 years (15 as a store manager), most of them good but the last 7 were terrible because of really poor upper management. This stuff happens all over.

Key word here "RETURN ON INVESTMENT". Any of you that think sponsorships go away because a guy was a jerk to a fan, or made a comment you didnt like or anything else--you are just fooling yourself. In our "in the toilet" economy, every company is looking at their expenditures closer than ever. Advertising promotions change with regularity, and when you are closing stores and laying off employees (like I am told Advance is doing), high dollar promotions often meet the ax. With a friend in upper management, sometimes a deal will last even though it may not be as good a return as wanted. Many sponsorships happen because a company owner or key upper management person likes a certain sport or event---even though the numbers dont always show it to be a smart investment. WIth NHRA attendance falling (as is attendance at most sporting events), and TV viewership down, the numbers probably dont play out. Until our economy turns around, I am afraid this may be the tip of the iceberg. Stay tuned. Just my 2 cents worth--and probably overpriced at that.

I remember when Nascar was just taking off money-wise--Dateline or one of those shows did a thing on sponsorship--there are marketing companys that on Monday morning watch the race-and with a stopwatch in hand-time how long a companys signage is on the tv screen--wether on the car-billboard-uniform-etc. and sells the info to the companies. Now if you take a front running car -say Jimmie Johnson-where they show him most of the day-and talks to his crew chief- 4 hours for the race-another couple in the pre race-all week long on the nightly talk shows-you're talking about 5 + hours of tv time for Lowes! Times 36 races. And who know how many more viewers than drag racing. I'll bet that however many million Lowes spends, it probably works out to to being cheaper per person/per second or however they figure it-than "just"a couple million dollar drag sponsorship.
Really 7-8 years is longer than many sponsors out there! I'd say Cruz did good with that deal!
Joe, that's exactly right! The problem is, we are in an environment where these deals are getting harder to land, and they've always been hard to land. I'm with Bob Cole. I've posted many times in the past that the fuel classes need to be re-invented, and 1000 ft is not the answer. I would rather see more cars, depth of field, and new names, running 1/4 mile speeds of 250, on nitro, than a small field of 300mph cars, owned by a smaller number of people, running 1000ft. That's just me, though.
