Lions Drag Strip may have laid down the first special mix of asphalt on yet another re-pave job sometime prior to the 66 season. It was called "Caloribond Paving.

The claim was this. "try the finest, bitin' est, smoothest racing surface in the world. Unless it was duel in the dew, the bite at 223rd & Alameda was legendary.

During my tenure at Englishtown (mid-70s) Goodyear came out with an experimental asphalt mix called "PlioPave". Vinnie bought into it and when the track was repaved he had it added to the mix at a local asphalt plant and when the paving company tried to lay it down it was a disaster. The mix was a sloppy mess and Vinnie aborted the pave, had it removed and went ahead with the paving using normal highway mix.

San Gabriel Drag Strip was noted for good traction. Story was that a paving company was close to the track & they paved it quite a bit w/ different mixes. If memory serves me correctly, the last major all asphalt track was Santa Pod in England. They just replaced asphalt with concrete a year or so ago. Probably some all asphalt tracks left in USA, but am thinking they would be "little guy" tracks.
