CHARLOTTE, NC (May 1, 2011) – Greg Stanfield and his Stanfield-Yonke Racing, Coffman Tank Trucks, Nitrofish Pontiac GXP team went into the 24th annual O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals with one goal, taking over the points lead, and they were oh so close. Stanfield would qualify in the ninth position heading into Sunday’s eliminations. With the Pro Stock car class being the most competitive class in the NHRA, Stanfield knew he would have to do his job on the tree come race day. Stanfield began the day taking out Ron Krisher first round and the number one qualifier of Ronnie Humphrey second round. He would however, eventually lose in the semi-finals to race winner, Vincent Nobile, but by only six feet. Even though Stanfield and his...
CHARLOTTE, NC (May 1, 2011) – Rickie Smith and his Nitrous Injected Chevy Camaro headed to Houston, Texas second in the points in the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge. Smith has been fighting back pain for the last few weeks, and was hesitant to get to the racetrack. The Carolina Drilling/Coffman Tank Trucks Chevy started off the weekend plagued by some bad luck. Not getting down the track in either session on Friday due to some electrical issues, Smith would be down to one pass on Saturday to get in the show. “We figured out that the nitrous switch had shorted out,” said Smith. “Both runs on Friday were affected by this. We found the electrical problem Friday night and we were ready for Saturday.” As Saturday...
CHARLOTTE, NC (May 1, 2011) – Matt Smith and his Al-Anabi Racing Buell headed into Houston, Texas this past weekend with high hopes; however Smith would leave the Royal Purple Raceway frustrated. “We had some issues in qualifying,” said Smith. “We worked hard to get the kinks out, and were the second quickest bike in the third session on Saturday. I was pumped and ready for race day, guess just a little too bit ready.” Smith qualified in the number 11 spot for the 24th annual O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals. Having to run a very fast Gerald Savoie first round, Smith knew he and his Buell would have to be on point. Smith however, left a little too early. Red-lighting by .029, Smith would lose the round. “I have nobody to blame...
CHARLOTTE, NC (May 1, 2011) – The Coffman Tank Trucks Buell of Angie Smith came out of Houston, Texas disappointed, but motivated for Atlanta. Smith struggled a bit in qualifying during the weekend, but knew what she had to do come race day. Qualifying in the 15th position for Sunday’s eliminations, Smith would face off against the number two qualifier of Karen Stoffer. Smith proved she was a force to be reckoned with on the tree as she left on Stoffer, however her Buell didn’t run the numbers she was hoping. Smith would lose in the first round after a frustrating weekend in Texas. “I’m disappointed,” said Angie Smith. “We had a few bumps in the road early in the weekend, but we were ready for first round today. We made a good...
BAYTOWN, Texas – An ET of 3.885 seconds run in Q2 on Friday put PEAK Motor Oil/Herculiner NHRA Full Throttle Series Top Fuel pilot TJ Zizzo seventh in the field of 16 at the 24th Annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway. A red light .163 seconds on the wrong side of good sent the veteran drag racer home early. The Illinois native faced Doug Kalitta, whom he beat in an upset at the 2010 U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. The hot, humid weather was problematic Saturday and was no different Sunday as Kalitta struggled to get down the track and popped the parachutes before the finish line. But it was for naught; what should have been Zizzo Racing’s first round win of the year became their second first-round...
BAYTOWN, Texas (April 30, 2011) - Wearing the banner of local Houston motorcycle retailer Stubbs 59 Powersports, Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Jim Underdahl snagged the No. 9 spot in the PSM ladder of this weekend's 24th annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas. His best quarter-mile time of his four qualifying attempts was a 6.939-second run at 193.10 mph in his very first lap, earning him the No. 9 spot in the ladder and pairing him with Eddie Krawiec in the first round of eliminations Sunday afternoon. "This really is a great track, always consistent for us, and we were pleased to run the '93 in our first lap off the trailer because it gave us a chance to work on getting good data...
Qualifying at the NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston, Texas turned out to be a two-part procedure for Jason Line and the Summit Racing team, as well as the entire Pro Stock field. Although the temperatures remained the same over the two days at Royal Purple Raceway, the eighty percent humidity on Saturday stifled the naturally-aspirated Pro Stock cars, preventing any changes among the top twelve runners from the day before, with the final two attempts being used primarily to work on race day set-ups. Luckily, Line’s 6.579-second, 210.47 mph clocking from Friday had essentially locked him into the fourth position for Sunday’s final eliminations. With his runs on Saturday netting the fifth quickest time in each session, the Troutman...
On paper, it would seem that Summit Racing Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson completed another solid qualifying effort on Saturday, with his 6.585-second, 209.95 mph from Friday afternoon earning him the sixth starting position for Sunday’s final eliminations of the NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston, Texas. However, even though he posted the third and fifth quickest time in the final two sessions at Royal Purple Raceway, the four-time champion felt there was still room for improvement in the hot and humid conditions, with both he and the crew immediately diving into the data from the past two days looking for answers. “Our Summit Racing Pontiac is working well, but just isn’t running as well as we’d like in the last half of the...
On the strength of a 6.571-second elapsed time recorded in his first attempt on Friday afternoon, Summit Racing/Genuine Hotrod Hardware racer Ronnie Humphrey captured the No. 1 qualifying position for Sunday’s final eliminations of the NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston, Texas. This marks the first time in the Jacksonville, NC native’s 47-race Pro Stock career that he has qualified in the top spot. Although the increased temperatures and high humidity on Saturday slowed the naturally-aspirated Pro Stock Cars and prevented any major changes at the top of the starting order, Humphrey showed he was more than deserving of the No. 1 position in the final session, posting the second quickest time of the round at 6.627 seconds to complete...
