Qualifying: J.R. Todd was the No. 5 qualifier at the NHRA Nationals at The Rock. He made four strong qualifying attempts, but his quickest was his first pass of the weekend, a 3.937-second effort at 331.64 mph. In the final qualifying session Saturday afternoon, he reached 338.83 mph, the fastest Funny Car speed in Rockingham Dragway history.
Eliminations: Todd advanced to his second-consecutive semifinal. He defeated Spencer Hyde and Daniel Wilkerson before losing to Matt Hagan. Todd and the DHL GR Supra team made seven strong passes this weekend and finished with a 3.931-second effort at 336.83 mph, but Hagan’s 3.916-second run at 331.86 mph got him to the finish line .0273 seconds before Todd.
Unofficial Point Standings: Todd leaves Rockingham tied with Ron Capps for third place in the NHRA Funny Car point standings. They trail second-place Jordan Vandergriff by 22 points and lead fifth-place Jack Beckman by 20 points.
Todd on Rockingham: “It was a good day, but we lost ground to the points leader. It’s good that we’re going to the later rounds in these playoff races, but we have to make it count. When doors open, you have to take advantage of that, and it won’t get any easier going forward. We’ll get back at it next week in St. Louis.”
