Pre-Race Notes:

  • J.R. Todd enters the NHRA U.S. Nationals in fourth place in the NHRA Funny Car point standings. He trails points leader Matt Hagan by 22 points, second-place Jordan Vandergriff by 15 points and third-place Ron Capps by 10 points; he leads fifth-place Jack Beckman by 52.
  • Todd is locked in a tight battle for the NHRA Funny Car regular season championship and its $150,000 bonus. The top-four drivers are separated by just 22 points with one race remaining in the regular season, and the U.S. Nationals awards points and a half making each round win worth 30 points instead of 20 and those four drivers separated by less than a round of racing. Beckman is 74 points out of first and remains in contention.
  • Todd is the fourth seed in the eight-driver NHRA Funny Car All-Star Callout, a special event for the drivers who earned the most qualifying bonus points since this event last year. The top seed will “call out” his opponent, and the second and third seeds will do the same. As the fourth seed, Todd will open the event against the driver none of the three higher seeds calls out. The winning driver with the quickest elapsed time in the first round will call out his opponent for the semifinals.
  • Todd is one of only three drivers with a chance to win three races this weekend; the U.S. Nationals, the NHRA Funny Car All-Star Callout and the Mission Foods $2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge. Todd joined his teammate, Doug Kalitta, in the Mission Foods Challenge winner’s circle two weeks ago in Brainerd, Minn., it was his second Mission Foods Challenge win of the season.
  • Todd has two U.S. Nationals wins in three final rounds; he also has one No. 1 qualifier.
  • Todd advanced to at least the semifinals seven times this season. He has one win, one runner-up finish and five semifinal showings in addition to three No. 1 qualifiers this season.
  • Todd is the 2018 NHRA Funny Car Champion and has 23 race wins in his career.

Pre-Race Quotes:

“It’s definitely not surprising that the regular season title is coming down to the last race especially with the way the category has been all season long. I think the five of us probably know, in the back of our minds, that it’s gonna come down to whoever wins the U.S. Nationals will win the regular season championship.

“Honestly, I’m not putting a lot of emphasis on it (regular season title). I’d rather just go out and win the race and let the points take care of themselves. More importantly, it’s good for everyone at Kalitta Motorsports if we win it because it’s a big bonus for everybody, but other than that, my focus is still on the overall championship.

“I’ve never won any of the callout races so it would be neat to win one this weekend. As far as the #2Fast2Tasty, it would be nice to get those extra bonus points that are available, even though we can’t win the overall title. Most importantly, we wanna win the Big Go because if we win on Monday, then we would be more than likely win the regular season championship.

“I’ve had confidence in this team all season long; we had some minor hiccups there in the middle of the season. We started out really strong at the beginning of the year and probably should have had a couple of wins under our belt. I never count us out; I kind of like it when no one talks about us or picks us to win. We can just fly under the radar. If we keep running well, we’re gonna have to be in the conversation. I just have to do my job behind the wheel. I know the yella fellas will give me a great car.”
