Worsham looks to deliver 2011-style success this weekend in Gainesville (1 Viewer)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 14, 2013) - Del Worsham, a 43-year old resident of Chino Hills, Calif., returned to class that launched his NHRA career at the beginning of the 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series as the driver of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car for Kalitta Motorsports. Worsham’s qualifying results thus far this season have really shown promise for the team, which is looking for its first round victory of the season in this weekend’s NHRA Gatornationals at the NHRA Raceway in Gainesville, Fla.

For the second consecutive weekend, Worsham and the DHL team were solid in qualifying at the previous event in Phoenix. The DHL “Yella Fellas” and Worsham are the only team in the Funny Car class that has made it down the track every time in qualifying this season. Worsham earned one bonus point for four passes that were all between 4.126 and 4.202 second passes. The DHL team was seeded ninth going into Sunday’s eliminations in Phoenix, but for the second consecutive event their qualifying success did not lead to race day success.

Even though Worsham did not secure the round one victory, the team is excited about what is to come. Worsham starts Gainesville less than one round outside of that coveted top ten points placement, and Gainesville might be the start of the turnaround. Last time he was racing at this track, Worsham was a winner. He started in the No. 1 spot in the Top Fuel class, and picked up his first win of his 2011 championship season. Worsham also won in back-to-back races in 2003 and 2004 as a Funny Car driver.

“Gainesville is always one of those events you circle on the calendar,” Worsham said. “It’s our first big event on the East Coast every year, and it’s a race every driver wants a trophy from. Gainesville is one of those great race tracks that you can feel all of its history as soon as you walk through the gates.”

Worsham began his career at Pomona in the fall of 1990, and has gone on to secure 33 career wins, including 25 in the Funny Car class. After clinching the 2011 Top Fuel NHRA World Championship, the popular Worsham retired from driving and took to leading the crew of fellow Kalitta Motorsports driver Alexis DeJoria. After one season out of the driver’s seat, he returned to the drivers’ seat this season as the driver of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car.
