POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 18, 2013) - Del Worsham, a 43-year old resident of Chino Hills, Calif., has returned to the class that established his NHRA career, as he is the new driver of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car this season. Worsham’s quest for his first Funny Car title began this weekend with the 53rd annual running of the famed Winternationals in Pomona, Calif. to start the 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Season.
Worsham proved he would be a major competitor in the Funny Car class. His beautiful yellow and black DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car was four out of four in qualifying passes. He earned a total of three bonus points with 4.10 (elapsed time), 4.10, 4.05, and 4.11 passes from Thursday through Saturday respectfully. He qualified in the No. 4 position for eliminations, but draw the competitive car of former event winner Bob Tasca III. The DHL “Yella Fellas” decided to go in pair two of the first round in the Funny Car class, but were a bit too aggressive on the tune-up as Worsham smoked the tires early on in the run.
Worsham began his career at Pomona in the fall of 1990, and has gone on to secure 33 career wins, including 25 in the Funny Car class. After clinching the 2011 Top Fuel NHRA World Championship, the popular Worsham retired from driving and took to leading the crew of fellow Kalitta Motorsports driver Alexis DeJoria. However, this season Worsham is back in the seat and is proving that he is a driver that you will have to beat on Sunday.
Although Worsham was defeated in the first round, he leaves Pomona in the Countdown for the Championship hunt in the tenth position.
