A near capacity crowd packed into Willowbank Raceway today (8th June) for the largest Drag Racing event outside North America, the Winternationals, to witness the finale of the 2007/2008 ANDRA Championship Drag Racing series.
Fans were not disappointed either with the Brett Stevens Racing team showing why they are the dominant force in the sport after sensational performances across all four of the professional brackets in which they compete resulting in two event wins (Brett Stevens - Top Alcohol and Pete Cochrane - Pro Stock Bike) and two runner ups (Brett Stevens - Top Doorslammer and Top Bike).
In addition, they also secured three World Records, one ANDRA National Record and a hat- trick of National Championships with Stevens himself victorious in Top Alcohol, Troy McLean winning Top Bike and Pete Cochrane taking home the honours in Pro Stock Bike
The world marks achieved include Brett Stevens becoming the first person to win three Group One National Championships in three different Drag Racing categories (2004 ANDRA Top Doorslammer, 2005 ANDRA Top Bike and 2008 ANDRA Top Alcohol) and also becoming the fastest Top Doorslammer driver in history (252.66mph/406.62kph), and his wife Kath Stevens becoming the fastest ever female Top Doorslammer pilot ever (241.54mph/288.72kph).
During qualifying for the Winternationals, Brett Stevens also officially re-set the ANDRA National Speed Record in his Kitten Car Care Products Funny Car to 259.37mph/417.41kph.
"Firstly, thank you to Willowbank Raceway for the excellent facility, it is an excellent race track and this has been the most awesome weekend of racing I have ever experienced in my life," Stevens said.
"I want to thank Jack Daniel's, Kitten Car Care Products, SP Tools, S&S Cycles and all of our other sponsors who have backed me and my team all the way, it has been a great thing.”
"A big thank you also to my crew for all of their hard work, especially Monty (Brown) in my chassis shop for building the world best race cars and bikes, all fans for coming out and supporting me and to my family and wife Kath (Stevens).”
"As for the 252mph, we have been making the power for a while now in the JD and SP Falcons but where did that come from? I don't know! What I do know is this is the best race meeting I have seen or been a part of so thank you all very much."
Riding the S&S Powered Pro Stock Buell and needing to make the Final to win his first National Championship and the second in a row for the Brett Stevens Racing team, Pete Cochrane didn’t stop there as he went on to win the Winternationals crown to cap off his personal best ever season.
“To get the ride on the Brett Stevens Racing/S&S Pro Stock Buell was a dream come true but the pressure was really on after such a successful season on debut last year, so to come through with another Championship for them is fantastic” Cochrane said.
“I can’t thank Brett Stevens and the S&S team enough for giving me the opportunity to race such a superb machine and their efforts in getting me where I am today.”
“It has been an incredible year from start to finish and I am just glad I have been able to reward everyone’s faith in me with the Championship trophy.”
“I would also like to thank my crew chief Hoody (Mark Hood) and crew Morrie (Thompson), and also Charlie (Hadayia) from S&S for their invaluable support and knowledge throughout the year and hope I can keep it up in the new season when it starts in September.”
