Pomona, Calif. - The first qualifying session of the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals, marking the official opening of the 2007 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing season is complete, and Tim Wilkerson felt his Levi, Ray & Shoup Funny Car performed close to his plan. The Chevrolet Monte Carlo ran 4.833 at 317.19 mph, putting Wilkerson in the No. 9 qualifying position.
As Wilkerson sat strapped in the car at the starting line ready to make his run, there was a long delay, and as Wilkerson waited, the clouds rolled in and the temperature dropped. These changes in conditions can affect a how a Funny Car should be tuned, and even though Wilkerson wasn't able to make any adjustments, he was able to make a strong, clean run down the quarter-mile.
"That was close to what we wanted," said Wilkerson. "We had a fuel delivery problem at testing last week and we're working on getting it straightened out. We had some new parts in the fuel system and we had them worked on this week. They just didn't work quite like I thought they would, but they were pretty close. So, it beat itself up a little bit because of that, but it's pretty good. We'll adjust it for tomorrow and try again. It's got a 70 in it. I don't think it's got a .60 but it's got a .70. And if the track is there and everything else is there, it ought to be good."
