A conservative Wilkerson sits in the No. 13 spot

Las Vegas, Friday: Tim Wilkerson turned conservative today at the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Wilkerson made two nice runs in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Chevrolet Monte Carlo and sits in the No. 13 qualifying position.

On the day's first run, Wilkerson ran 4.953 at 306.53 mph, which was a baseline for the team to run against in the evening session. It was a good start for the Springfield, Ill. Funny Car favorite, while many of the other cars struggled. It placed Wilk in the No. 6 spot. Under the lights in the evening, Wilkerson did improve, running a 4.868 at 309.42 mph. Unfortunately, a lot of cars improved in that session and Wilkerson ended up in the 13th spot.

" We changed our combination a little bit before coming here," explained Wilkerson. "We were looking to get the car a little more consistent. But now we're back on the conservative side. I thought it would go a little faster on the last run and it just got to the clutch there in the middle and the fuel wasn't right in it, so it burned it up at the other end. So, it didn't go fast enough.

"But I think we've got something for them tomorrow. I think we can go in the 70's and keep ourselves in the show. I'm optimistic that it will go tomorrow again. We're going to be running earlier in the day, but the last session is going to be nip and tuck. So, we have to get our stuff together for the third qualifier and hope for the best."
