[coverattach=1]POMONA, Thursday: With one down and three to go, Funny Car championship contender, Tim Wilkerson is sitting in the No. 8 qualifying position at the Automobile Club of Southern California Finals.
It was a hot, sunny day at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona and Wilkerson was able to get the Levi, Ray & Shoup Chevrolet Impala SS down the track while posting a 4.169 at 297.02 mph.
“I did think we would a little faster,” said Wilkerson. “But as we sat waiting for our turn to run, I watched some of the cars get into trouble in the middle of the track. So I sucked it back a little at the last minute, so I kind of chickened out on us. And then right in front of us they go a 4.12 and I went ‘oh no’. I knew I left a couple of hundreds on the table by doing that.
“I think it’s a good start for the weekend. Tomorrow we’ll see if we can make it go a little faster. I’d like to run a .10 or .12 tomorrow, if we could. The track’s probably got it in it, because we left a lot on the table in the middle. It’s going to be hot again tomorrow and we should have the same track conditions. So if we can get up in the .10’s or .12’s it should be good.”
