DALLAS, Friday: Funny Car pro, Tim Wilkerson was pleased with his Levi, Ray & Shoup Chevy Impala’s performance in qualifying at the O’Reilly Super Start Batteries Fall Nationals today. He made two nice, strong, clean runs, which was just what the talented driver and tuner was looking for out of his hot rod.

In the first session, Wilkerson made a statement with a crowed pleasing 4.151 at 298.40 mph, which was good for the No. 3 spot. Then as a beautiful Texas evening settled on the race track, Wilkerson again made a thunderous statement. As a close to the session, with Jack Beckman in the other lane and with header flames higher than their roofs, the two Funny Cars made identical 4.099 runs, bringing the crowd to their feet. This monster run put Wilkerson in the No. 6 qualifying position.

“This is kind of what we wanted to do coming in here,” explained Wilkerson. “We were a little bit skittish last week in Charlotte and it cost us a good qualifying position. But today both of our runs were good. We had the same motor in the car and everything looks happy. It should have run a little bit better on our last run but it dropped a hole down there. It burnt the spark plug up in one of the holes. But it’s all good and we’ll come back tomorrow and see if we can go low E.T. of the day. And hopefully we’ll get our stuff to go down through there and do some good. It’s got more in it that’s for sure and that’s what we want to find out tomorrow.”
