Simple question to ask...

Why is a return of a 1320 foot race track for Nitro cars so important to you as a fan? Or as a racer?

Have at it folks...

For me Tim its a history thing. Granted I'm only 28 but I've been going to the races since I was 2. I grew up on the 1/4 mile. I've been to a number of events at 1000' and honestly I cant really tell the difference. To me as long as I'm able to see my heroes race in person I'm just fine. The sensory overload of nitro racing is still the same. I still get to watch the teams fire the cars before runs and get my face full of nitro, meet my heroes, and have that personal feeling at the races. I would like to see us go back to the 1/4 but I'm ok with it now.:D

I'm happy with a 1/5 of a mile or even 1/4 of a kilometer....

pick a distance and make everyone run it....

why is 100 yards so important to the NFL?...cause thats the way it was when it started....I completely understand why they went to 1000' and i don't think we are ready to return to that yet based on the current rules package. Do i really care if we go back to 1320 or stay at 1000....no not completely, but changes need to be made either way

because there isn't a place to run a measured mile near most cities? because that's what Pappy and Wally picked? Because 440 yards is close the 400 meters? why not a hundred yards like an American football field? Heck, if racing 4 wide is okay, what the heck difference does a track length make?

By the way: NONE OF THE ABOVE APPLY for the poll
1/5 mile is 1056 feet, 1/4 klick is 823 feet

EDIT: MM, I was slowly typing one fingered and this post is not in response to yours:o

... because "new and different" isn't always better....

Too many DECADES of watching cars compete- sometimes blindingly fast (for their time), sometimes completely out of control- on a quarter-mile... All the best big-time races I have ever seen have taken place down the quarter... Not that I haven't seen a few good ones on the eighth- just no good PRO ones...

And NHRA already fixed the problem as to why they implimented the rule in the first place- we don't see too many 60-Ton cranes in the shutdown areas anymore, do we?... ;)

Because it's too short. I've had sneezes longer than four seconds :)

Seriously, I've seen too many races decided in the last 320. Too many people just get out of it now when they would've legged it only to win the race.

Wasn't a 60 ton crane....was boom lift...company I work for owned it. Was in a bad spot but had nothing to do with the accident.

Timmah! What am I going to do with all of my old records? You know, Ronnie and the Daytonas, Jan and Dean, and the Beach Boys. Too many song lyrics to change . . . . " . . burnin up that thousand feet."
Gotta' be a quarter mile.
Cheers,
Ed

Good point, I can just see the NFL adopt an 80 yard field for Player safety, how do you think that would go over?

Because I love hearing a hard top-end charge. You don't get that at 1000 feet. The engines are just starting to get wound up then have to shut down.

Tradition..... make adjustments for safety as and when needed..but don't toss out tradition.. too often sports like to toss it out... to ease their own minds...

no matter what the distance the "unthinkable" can happen. its better to be prepaired for if an when it happens.

So after a few day's it seems the majority of those who have voted (50% as of 3:35pm on Sunday May 30th) believe the "HISTORY OF THE SPORT" is the most important reason why a return to 1320 is important.

However, as it's been discussed by NHRA and others, a return to 1320 would require a SIGNIFICANT reduction in performance. And the last time I checked, the "HISTORY" about drag racing has always been about MAXIMIZING PERFORMANCE... SETTING RECORDS.... REACHING BACK, GRIPPING IT AND RIPPIN IT... trying to knock it out of the ball park so to speak. If we return to 1320... This HISTORY and a MAJOR part of our sports Identity DIES.....doesn't it?

So... are you willing to sacrifice THIS area of History to protect a 'distance'?

I am.

I know what you're saying in regards to the identity drag racing has always had with ultimate performance, but we've already moved to 1,000 foot. The next thing will be 1/8-mile, at which point I believe will be the demise of professional level drag racing as we know it. It may still draw some crowds to the tracks themselves, but I think producing an attractive television package around a race that's so short will be too tall of a task. And if that happens, there goes the marketing package for everyone from the suits in Glendora to the very last operating team.

Detune the combinations, and yes, I'm going to say it again, add traction control, and move 'em back to the 1320. They'll be safer, the racing will be closer with much more regularity, they'll be cheaper to operate allowing more teams to step up and/or get back in. Couple that with dropping the ticket prices to a level that actually fills the seats and maybe the sponsors will start taking notice again. Then we'll have something.

Sorry for the slight derail in the last paragraph, Tim.
