Whiteley looking to stay on a 'roll' in Vegas

LAS VEGAS - Hot off a win at last month's Division 7 event in Tucson, Ariz., NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Jim Whiteley and the YNot Racing team are looking to stay hot during this weekend's SummitRacing.com Nationals at 'The Strip' at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Whiteley ran an incredible 5.31 second elapsed time in the final at the altitude track, and is anxious to see what his Norm Grimes tuned machine can do on a top caliber track like Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Prior to his win in Tucson, the Grand Junction, Colo., native had a very up and down year. The team qualified strong at events in Pomona, Calif., and Phoenix, only to fall prey to severe tireshake in round one. In Tucson, the team once again produced solid numbers in qualifying and maintained that level until the final. In the final, Whiteley belted the drag racing equivalent to an out-of-the-park home run with a 5.31 shot that was heard around the Top Alcohol racing world. The run has the internet buzzing on what the car will produce on a national event track like Vegas.

"Norm and the guys have put a tremendous amount of work getting the car to run the way it has been," said Whiteley. "For the final in Tucson, Norm finally tried something different from what we had been trying, and it really, really responded."

"We're all excited to see what the weekend holds," Whiteley continued. "The Vegas national event is one of the few on the schedule that actually favors the blown alcohol cars with the heat and elevation. Don't think for a second we're counting the A/Fuel cars that will be there out. Duane Shields has been running awful stout lately and so has the Lucas car. Not to mention the other blown cars run strong up here. Hopefully we can have another good weekend."

After the event the team plans to stay and test on Monday.

"We didn't get to do near the testing we wanted to do during the offseason due to weather," stated Whiteley. "We'll be testing some different parts we wanted to try. It should be fun."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two sessions, followed by one final session Saturday morning. Eliminations begin with round one on Saturday afternoon and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
