Where's WJ?

She yelled at me working the top end at match race. Folks on the starting line sent some street cars down the track while the dragsters will still on. We were wrapping up her chutes when she put me in her crosshairs. Dark, I didn't have a radio to stop them. We weren't happy either. If someone hit her dragster they were gonna kill us first.

No apology, but sort of a polite remark after the fact about how much care we were taking not to tangle up the lines. I haven't lost any sleep over it.....

On topic.... WJ at another match race, after the fact. He had quite the personality. Very quick witted and fun to listen to. Four cars at that one. WJ, KJ, AJ, and a dude driving an old unmarked ex-GM Performance Parts Cutlass named Greg Anderson. All were beyond nice guys. WJ would have appeared stand off-ish at first glance. Big signs on his pit saying "no autographs til after the race". He held to that, but I don't think anyone who wanted an autograph missed out. He stayed at the ropes for hours.

Would that be @ Huntsville?

Wonder if there cars are just worn out?

I think KJ's car was new last year and WJ's is 3 years old I think. WJ's car is the one he put on the roof during testing @ Atlanta. He told me it was the best car he's ever had. I asked him if he thought the car was as good after being repaired and he said yes.

lack of sponsorships is not just a wj problem, its a problem the entire catagory is facing. only a couple of teams appear to have kept any major backing and as much as i love the class, even i think its gettin' kinda dry.

Sure was.

We had to be standing next to each other because I was down there too. I remember her stopping before the turn off on the track and was cussing her crew because the clutch was too stiff. Does that ring a bell? George Howard asked me to go help get the cars off the track and I wasn't even working for him.:D
If I remember correctly, she was match racing Tim Freeman?

Steve Smith was the other guy. Shirley went through Huntsville a few times. I remember them stopping on the track because the turn is too tight down there. We had to push them back and forth a couple of times to get the cars off.

Anyone notice you need to qualify in the top 8 in order to have a chance at winning? that would be the other Johnson family.

So should everyone who doesn't qualify in the top 8 just quit? Of course not.

Neither should WJ if he doesn't want to, no matter what anyone else thinks.

I think it says a lot about the grit of WJ, that he continuously has fielded two cars, basically on his own dollar, for the past few years.
These cars run on more cubic dollars than sense and I'm pretty sure he's trying his hardest because it is his profession and not just out there to have "fun".

This is true, they have not had a real sponsor since the GM collapse. That being said, what's the difference if they miss a race or two? Some of the other underfunded teams do. Going out the first round would not be "fun".How about Ritchie Stevens ? he can't get out of the garage where as Krisher could. Motorsports money is tight!

WJ was a childhood hero of mine. WJ is a legend in NHRA so we should all have respect for him Kurt and Arliene. The cost of running a two car team without a major sponser must be tough. Let's not forget that some of these "Pro Teams" have income from their personal endevours. WJ knows and wants to win but sometimes funds overcome people's abilitys. I agree WJ has had some moments of frustration but he is a Pro Stock Class Racer! That's where his and his familys hearts are.. My 2 cents...

Am I correct in saying WJ and KJ are both sitting out Houston? Only 16 PS cars there. Remember a few years ago when it seemed like the NHRA should have 32 car PS shows because there were so many showing up? Like virtually all classes, the costs just keep escalating, while the pool of competitors shrinks.

Walking thru the pits I kept thinking, someone is missing. It wasn't until 1st round qualifying was almost done before I realize there was no WJ or KJ. Not the same watching pro stock without them.
