Where's the check? (1 Viewer)

I noticed yesterday none of the series champions got to sign the big Champions check when they were presented with their Championship trophy....

It’s all direct deposit now. Or Zelle. Can’t have paper checks (or even foam board signs) because of COVID.

I mentioned this in another thread. Not sure what happens here, Coke isn't paying and Camping World just signed on, so they didn't get the benefit of a full year of marketing.

Is there even going to be an awards banquet this year? Or has that freak of a governor outlawed that as well?

Most reasonable Californians feel Gov. Gavin Newson has done all that is humanly possible to hold down the Covid and make sure our hospitals aren't overrun and run out of business. Ask residents of Iowa, Arkansas, Arizona and Georgia how their hospitals are doing.

Cuz of C O V I D......

By the way, our hospitals in AZ are doing as well as possible. I'm glad we have Gov Ducey. he is doing a great job under the circumstances.

I heard that....thank God.....Thanksgiving get-togethers highly discouraged and wearing a mask as you chew your food are recent Newsom proclamations; no doubt one of the reasons California's hospitals are in such good shape.

Wait a minute; I'm getting political here....back to not displaying the big Championship checks - after the $500,000 ones in the past I would imagine they're plumb embarrassed to display the ones they handed out this year. Probably about 1/4 the size, if that. I'm not totally unsympathetic to the NHRA.....after all, they took a really big hit this year and likely aren't flush with money. I wouldn't know what CW agreed to chip in.

Being a resident (Hostage) in California fortunately we are able to have unrestricted Funerals now but not sizable Thanksgiving gatherings. So - we will be holding services for our dearly departed Turkey with a celebratory meal and a Wine toast afterwards.

The NHRA is top-heavy with salaries and that is part of the reason the cost of going to an NHRA National Event is going higher each year.
It's great to see Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars, Pro Stock, and the Bikes but that all requires large payouts in most years without the coronavirus which jacks up the cost of their shows and the cost for fans and spectators.

In some ways, the IHRA hosting Sportsman Racers is a smarter way to go and god knows it seems like there are a ton of them showing up for races.

I understand the NHRA has most of their eggs in one basket when promoting Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars along with Pro Stock and the Bikes but really excludes a whole lot of drag racers who don't feel like they are part of the big show. That's a problem in my view.

On pages 100-101 of Robert Post's High Performance, you can see the genesis of NHRA's reluctance to pay big purses. Wally fought constantly with Garlits over money. Wally's influence is as strong in NHRA management culture as Garlits' influence is in race car and engine design.
So now you have an organization who is dependent on sponsor money and gate and has lost both. What do you do? Sell the headquarters in Glendora so you can hand out big checks and have one of those ridiculous season ending banquets? Take Clifford and Cromwell's salary? Maybe a payday loan?

Starting a new organization is really impractical unless you have a silicon valley billionaire handing out $$$. Fixing NHRA and its lack of vision and standoffish culture makes the most sense.
