[Video] Arend and Worsham visit Santa Maria high school's racing club fundraiser

What can I say about the Santa Maria High School Auto Shop program. That is a success story about saving young lost souls. Many of those kids were on th verge of dropping out, failing out, and just giving up. What Art, Elaine, AJ, Ray Hawkins, and the many others who help support the kids is increadable.

The kids are the ones who have invited us up for their Cruzin for Life program in the Fall and have always made us feel welcomed. Even though none of them can get on the track with the car, they do all the work on the car, from preping, tuning, loading and un loading, to riding in the tow vehicle. Imagine 25-30 well behaved teens in the back of a pick-up. And their good and competitive too.

The car runs in NE1 (7.60) which made it to the final round at the last ANRA race of 2009. They will be at this year's March Meet where they will be looking to qualify in a 32 car field, which in past years that had over 60 cars showing up for. Last year's March Meet they qualified 9th and went a few rounds before losing to a guy who felt bad about beating them.

Santa Maria has an increadable support base, so it is no suprise to see Worsham and Arend there for the kids. No doubt thanks to the Johnson Family.

This is an area in which the NHRA could do more, in my opinion. Together with a sponsor such as WyoTech they could encourage High School programs of this sort. They do work.
I have often wondered if a "Collegiate Eliminator" might have a place in the NHRA format. There are programs for engineering schools to build small racers, electric vehicles, robotic auto controls, and cetera. Why not some sort of Econo-Funny Car class for college and University programs? This might dovetail well with the Lucas Oil series and get the schools some valuable airtime. What would Bob Frey say?

I have often wondered this too ... as SAE sponsors several different collegiate motorsports programs. There is a Formula Ford 2000 program as well as the electric vehicle and robotic races. I would like to see that program carried over to the drag strip, but I think it should be along the lines of electric vehicles, something different from existing drag race tech and an invaluable engineering exercise for the students, as well as the possible development of sustainable technologies. The only problem would be the same problem all other drag racers have ... funding. These programs are not cheap and often absorb huge chunks of a university's departmental budget.
