Despite the fact that a Top Fuel car is used to illustrate an article about Funny Cars, it should be noted that both authors of these individual stories have been involved in the enthusiast publication business for a long time. John Perly Huffman began his career at Hot Rod Magazine, and Paul Stenquist has been writing about drag racing for a very long time.
Good to see the Times employing knowledgeable writers.
Along with Stenquist and Huffman, the New York Times also uses works written by Jim McCraw, the former editor of both Super Stock & Drag Illustrated and Hot Rod Magazine, and Norman Mayersohn, a former staffer at Car Craft Magazine. Mayersohn, the driving half of the Voegelin & Mayersohn Super Modified Camaro, earned runner-up honors at both the U.S. Nationals and, if memory serves me on this, the Winternationals.
Voegelin, Mayersohn and the rest of the loonies then at Car Craft Magazine, actually came up with the concept of both the Super Modified and Econo Altered and Dragster classes. I'd love to say I helped, but since the only thing I knew about drag racing was Top Fuel, I was "excused!"
Regardless, if nothing else this proves that old magazine writers can sometimes still find a home for their work!
