Any idea what the story is behind that attempt? I can't think of a single reason why that should have been done. If he just had to make a pass for points reasons, I sure don't think I would have done anything but idle down the track, that was insane.

must be a Japanese thing, I think thats Fuji Speedway.

SHOW OF FORCE RACING

I can remember during the us tour over there in the seventies the Japanese were not happy with all the rubber put down on the track. So they scraped the track before and after the drag race demonstration/show and would not allow any kind of traction compound whatsoever.

Back in 1994 I was part of TEAM USA and raced my TA/FC at Fuji and Oita Aso Racing Park in Japan. There were top fuel cars there also.

The FUJI event was being rained out and there were about 80,000 spectators who were sitting patiently in the grandstands. Melvin Record from the NHRA came into the formua one garages where we were pitted and asked if we would at least parade our cars down the track in the rain so the spectators could see them. When I found out the Japanese fans had paid about $80.00 each US to see us and would get no refunds or rain checks I refused to parade my car. I suited up and had the guys tow us to the line. I put a sandwich bag over the mag so it wouldn't crossfire with all the water on it.

The guys fired the car and dropped the body. I did a burnout with rain water dropping into my lap through the roof hatch. We did the best we could to get down the track in the rain. It broke my heart to see the Japanese not see us run, so we made an attempt to do it anyway.

The rest followed suit and we had a lot of fun doing it.

This was cut out of a magazine article from our trip in 1993 when it didn't rain on us.

Shirley Muldowney was part of our group and it was great to see her appreciation for the fans. There are a hundred great stories from folks like us who have been fortunate enough to be able to put everything they own in a couple of shipping containers and race in Japan. The Japanese did everything in their power to make us feel welcome and many of them cried their eyes out when we had to leave after our two week stay.
