TOPEKA, Kan. (June 1) – Driver Tommy Johnson, Jr. is confident the Monster Energy Funny Car team made important performance strides at the O’Reilly Summer Nationals.
The team qualified 11th (4.933/304.32) in a Funny Car field that lived up to its usual competitive standards.
In the opening round of eliminations, Johnson staged opposite Jerry Toliver. Though it was a very close match, Toliver won the round crossing the finish line with a 4.946-second elapsed time at 305.22 mph. Johnson clocked 4.950/305.36.
“All in all it was a very good weekend for the team,” said Johnson. “I think we made huge strides, not only in performance, but in reliability and consistency.
“The car ran good, we qualified decent, and in the first round, we ran another good number. It was a close race. I’m not disappointed with our performance.
“It does give us confidence going into Chicago next weekend when we know we have a car that’s competitive and has some consistency.”
