Thursday test numbers (1 Viewer)

Sorry to have a pessimist view on these big speeds, but it's another year that NHRA has made no attempt to control the costs or safety of the nitro cars. If it shows later in the year, by the size of the fields, that we have plenty of teams that can afford to run these cars on the ragged edge safely then I'll shut up about it. Obviously none of us want to see anyone get hurt , or have to park their car if we start seeing the carnage of last year. Good luck to all teams.

Some of that extra speed didn't come from running them on the ragged edge. It came from removing the rear body 'mud flaps'. Same with the (now banned) laid-back headers a few years back - that simple mod increased FC speeds 3-5mph and ET's .03-.05 seconds overnight. Made 'em a bitch to control in the traps but we saw times and speeds back in 2017 that would win any race in 2026. (Hight 3.79, 339)

So far the handful of drivers running 340 hasn't proved to be unsafe. But if somebody runs 350 the next thing you know everybody will shoot for 355 or 360. I say enough is enough.

Let's also keep in mind that the season hasn't started yet, testing is not race day. If we start seeing consistent 345 to 350 mph speeds will Nhra along with PRO have to make a decision? Having watched all kinds of racing especially drag racing for 60 years, the only thing I know for sure is that the general idea is to go as fast as you can and win the race. Some years ago Nascar had to limit the speeds on super speedways after cars started flying through the air injuring and even killing drivers and spectators. Still lots of dissent over the quality of Cup racing today.

The fact that so many teams have run these numbers demonstrates that the nhra is alive and well. And that this is where the big boys and girls come out to play. I think it also puts the new ihra into perspective as the 1/8 mile side show it is destined to be. Or maybe the place teams go to make some quick cash and for some to gain race experience so they can play in the big leagues. I'm sure some of you will disagree ....

How about for now we can refer to the IHRA as the JR league. It sure as hell is a great place for new teams to cut their teeth and gain experience. As for any of the major league players to stop in and play. It should be a good barometer for the JR's to see how they compare. I'm all for it.
Remember how a couple TF guys ruled the IHRA but when they came to NHRA they didn't do squat for several years.

Like Milligan? Still hasn’t done much

Just talking out of my donkey here, but I have to wonder with all of the restrictions (gear, rpm limits etc.) if the jump in speed is coming from second half tire spin or lack of it. Reinhart always preached that fuel cars spun all the way down the track. Maybe Grubnic and Johnson figured out how to stick the car down on the back half of the track.

you just never know what is going to work, and when, and with who ..... JR with the 3.861 @ 338 by dickie and todd,
i think last friday? do you think the kalitta camp has stumbled onto something that is working for all 3 cars?, which
would lean towards improved control and application of the horsepower from the engine and clutch?, not anything
aerodynamic ..... just a guess.
