Trying to go faster , like all crew chiefs do. Torrence did the same thing.
keep the old tune up till they catch up to you, then switch over to new tune up, might as well win as much as possible, either way when you switch to new tune up your going to go thru troubles and might as well when they caught you anyway

Not being a wise guy, genuinely curious. Do you race?

Every racer I know has the mentality that if I stand still they are going to run me over. So they keep trying to get/stay ahead, knowing that sometimes you will have to sacrifice todays success for future success.


And it's more difficult with a Nitro car, because you can't run one on a Dyno, or go to the local track and make 20 runs in a weekend like Greg Anderson will do. It takes time to work through it, and as everyone has shown over the years, you can't do the experimenting on Saturday, then snap your fingers and go back to the "old" tune up for Sunday.

Jeremy: I agree with you completely. I understand that - as Alan points out - that's not what the top Crew Chiefs do, but I think this mind-set of change to try to "stay ahead" is a big mistake. Too often they get lost and have a real hard time just getting back to where they were.
 
I understand what Alan said. You have to try things to keep above your competition. Unfortunately it didn't work for Grubby this year. It worked for AJ though. Doug Kalitta could win this year.
 
Always been a Force fan and it’s been a tough year. I think this year presented fewer opportunities on fast tracks due to weather or whatever so being able to run mid 3.60s didn’t matter much of the time. The competition has progressed so that maybe 6 cars can run just about as fast as Brittany. What’s interesting is that of the last 10 races, never got out of round 2, she has run 4.00+ 6 times and she only had to run mid 3.70s to win her lost round in 7 of the last 10 races. So it appears to be setup and tuneup for mid conditions vs ‘faster’. Hasn’t Grubby always been more a master of fast tracks than tricky ones? Have to pull for Doug now.

This is why Torrence was in a big slump. The went with the new engine block design and started from scratch because it would be a matter of time when all of the teams went that route. So, what they did is, tucked the old tune-up with the old stuff away and went basically in full blown testing mode to get the new stuff dialed in. So basically, even tho they are not setting the world on fire, They are way ahead.
 
Reminds me of something Gary Beck once said in an interview while he was in a little slump. I’m paraphrasing but it was like this-

“In the pursuit of coming up with a new combination to go quicker than 5.6, you forget how to 5.6”

Once they turn the corner, stand back.
 
Hard core racers are always looking for an advantage. I know guys who have weekend raced for years, even decades, who do OK and have run the same combination forever. Some have moderate success, while many are usually loaded up by round 3.

The guys I know who win the track Championships, (and in NHRA) Divisional and National Championships, are constantly trying new things, experimenting, and innovating to be better. That doesn't always mean faster. It could mean more consistent down the track, more consistent in reaction time, or less likely to red light.

I spoke to Ray Miller III in Columbus about his new car and ask: "
How fast will it run flat out?" He said: "That's not what it's built for" The converter, the low gear ratio in the trans, the rear gear, the weight balance, and engine tune are all about Big Buck Bracket Racing. He didn't get his combo by accident. The point being that he is pretty successful, and not by doing the same thing forever, you have to continue to innovate and learn and that comes with sacrifice.

In Nitro racing, performance is all that matters. And to
consistently win, you sometimes have to sacrifice today, to win tomorrow.

Not sure what engine block your referring too, and I am no crew chief, but I would think the engine block would be the last part of a new "combination" .....

On the money, and evident by the fact that the Pro classes, with the possible exception of PSM, aren't any faster or quicker than they were 10 years ago. They were in Dallas last week only because of conditions that are rarely seen.

Those who will win championships are those who know how to negotiate a crappy, 130-degree track with the DA at 4000 as well as they negotiate one smoother than a baby's ass that's 90 degrees in 1000' DA - accomplished by exactly what you just said....trying new things, experimenting and innovating. Leah Pruitt isn't in the points lead because she can run 3.63@338mph (Torrence, Ashley). She's there because her team has worked on consistency and so has she. Gone are the .100+ lights that cost her many a round.

Brittany? I wouldn't know. Perhaps they're 'trying something new' or maybe they simply (and temporarily) lost the handle on the tuneup. It happens, often for months, and even the best players in nitro racing have experienced it.
